Chapter 1:
Beep, beep, beep, beep.
A pinching in the crease of my arm and the feeling that something was lodged down my throat, made I forced my eyes open.
“Help, someone quick. Help!” There was a tapping of shoes getting closer and closer and a stab in my arm sent me off on a voyage through swirling colorful dots and fuzzy landscapes.
Chatter woke me from my reverie without a tube in my mouth this time. “She’s waking up! Quick, Andrew, Quick!”These words had absolutely no significant meaning to me, just nonsense in the white noise. I squinted against a painfully white light. It made everything in my head swim. I didn’t understand anything that was going on, where was I? How’d I get here?
“Tabetha, Sweetheart?” called an aged women with smiling white teeth as bright at the ceiling. They were rimmed in a bright red that actualy complimented her light skin, thin black lines surrounded concerned green eyes and freckles. Her brown hair was pulled back into a neatly kept bun. She was holding a hand that had lightly squeezed her shoulder; it belonged to a tall man with red hair and blue eyes.
“Tabetha, honey, how do you feel?” Were they talking to me? The woman laid a hand over mine; her hands were considerably darker than mine.
“Where am I?”
“You're in the hospital.” The man said.
“You and your friends were in a car accident. Do you remember any of it, anything at all?” The lady looked deep into my eyes. But no matter how hard I tried, and I tried, I couldn’t remember anything at all.
I shook my head, “Is everyone alright?” I asked looking around at the crowd of people, two of the girls had cuts and bruises all over their exposed skin, one had a splint and the other a bandage on her right arm. There was a man standing in the corner, his lips were pouted out and dark shadows were casted over his eyes, his black hair sticking out at many angles, but it didn’t make him look bad, just a little tired. I looked back to the women; she shot a nervous look to the man in the corner.
“You dirty rotten LIAR!” A girl with streaks of black running down her cheeks, eyes that were ruby red, and a nose to match it, stomped forward through the door and straight for me. Her arm raised high and a scowl branded to her face. Before anyone could stop her, that manicured hand came down as a claw.
Stars danced around my vision and, although I was sitting down, I felt like I was going to fall over.
A riot broke out in the room that started with the boy in the corner stepping forward and yelling, “Hey!” Aggressively, the girl was just out of his reach so he couldn’t stop her before, but the man with red hair, grabbed both her arms and haled her out of the room.
The whole way she was screaming, “You said you were close, you lied! You had barely left! You lied and now she’s DEAD!” Those words bounced around inside my skull, ‘Now she’s dead!’, ‘she’s dead!’ I couldn’t breathe, I’d killed someone? A pair of dark eyes jumped in front of my face, He was yelling something, something I couldn’t hear. All I could hear was the same three words that girl had said, over and over and over again.
My head bobbed back and forth as he shook me back down to earth. “Tabetha, Can you hear me?”
“I killed someone?” He looked down, not daring to meet my eyes. “Answer me, please.” I whispered. He nodded. “Who was it?” His brows bunched up, he still hadn’t looked up and he wasn’t answering me. I looked around for someone who would give me the name, but they all had the same look on.
“The only person you haven’t seen yet, Tab.” The girl with the splint replied. I nodded mouthing the words, ‘oh, okay’ even though I had no clue who it was. Her eyes narrowed. “Who is it, Tab?”
My heart sank into my stomach; did she expect me to tell her? To spit out a name of a person I didn’t even know? I stuttered, looking from her eyes to everyone else in turn.
“Tabetha, Do you know who I am?” My mouth dried up and my mouth couldn’t form words. “Oh god,” Her eyes widened, “She’s lost it.” Every confused stare darted to her. “Can't you see it from the look in her eyes? This isn’t Tabetha…well at least not the one we know. She’s doesn’t know who any of us are. Isn’t that right, Tabs?” I nodded and everyone broke out into chatter.
The noise had the same effect as the slap; it sent pain to my temples that just wouldn’t go away. “Quiet!” This shocked everyone and they went back to looking at me.
“You remember me though, don’t you?” The boy asked.
I shook my head, “No, I’m sorry.” I really tried to remember, but his face just wasn’t matching up with my memories. Actually, I had no memories to match his face to.
“I’m Rosemary Plataric. I don’t mean to brag or anything but I’ve been your best friend since third grade. We’re roommates.” The girl with the splint on jumped forward, shaking my hand with her good arm. She was pretty tall with dark brown hair and chestnut eyes.
The other girl walked forward. “Kristy Ellenburg. Not your best friend, but a close one. We met two years ago, when you first moved onto campus.
“Campus? As in college?” Everyone nodded. “Wow I’m in college.”
“I never thought I’d have to say this, but I’m your mother, Molly, and this,” She motioned to the red haired man who walked in a while ago, “is your father, Andrew.” He smiled with sad eyes.
“Trevor.” The man with black hair said. That was it. Just Trevor, no I’ve been your friend since last year or we just met. No background story.
“Can I see her?” I spat. “The girl who died, maybe I can remember her.”
“Oh trust me, if you haven’t already then you never will.” Kristy muttered. But what was it supposed to mean?
“They won’t let anyone in.” Andrew, my dad, said. “She was beat up pretty bad, said she was missing li-“ He coughed when Molly, my mother, jabbed him with her elbow. “Right, they won’t let anyone see her. She’s having a closed casket funeral.”
“But it’s not like it matters, you could just look at Kim.” Rosemary added.
“Unfortunately, Kim isn’t in her right state of mind, Rose.” Molly said.
“But she’s seen her, and you can’t deny it, Kim looks exactly like Nina. She’s supposed to, it’s not like their fraternal. One may be older, but besides that they are exactly the same person.” Kristy added.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“The girl Kim is the one who smacked you. She had a twin sister, Nina, which is the one who died. Their Identical in every way; the only difference is Nina is eleven minutes younger than Kim.” Trevor explained.
“Oh, I understand. Continue.” But the doctor walked in. They explained everything to him and he told them to leave, I’d have to stay overnight and in the morning I’d need an examinations and a ct scan.
Everyone said their goodbyes and left one by one, Mom and dad said how much they loved me, Kristy said she hopes to see me in school soon, Trevor just said he hopes I get better and stalked out stiffly, taking a sad look back at me. Rosemary was the last one to leave.
“You know there was something that he didn’t tell you. I don’t know why but I thought you might as well know.” What was she talking about? “Trevor is your boyfriend, Tab, and also the cutest guy in the school. You’re lucky you got him. Every girl is after him. Well, bye, hon.” She skipped out of the room and left me in the cold, white room, completely alone.
