CHAPTER 1: On Duty

*alarms at 5:45 am*

F*ck this. Another day, another duty for me to save lives. I grabbed my phone and quickly turned my alarm off, don't wanna wake up the bugs in my house. I'm living alone in this mansion that I've bought with my blood and tears ha ha ha. If you're asking about maids? Well, there are none. Bakit nga ba ayaw ko? Imagine, this house is just like my second home, ospital ang buhay ko, not like other consultants, i am always on call. Bakit? Self-entitled single ako mga beshie, yung pamilya ko every weekends ko lang nakikita; nasa Alabang sila, ako nasa Manila, sad life. I just wanna focus on my career for now, after that heart break? I don't wanna get involved with love again.

*phone rings*

"Good morning?"

"Doktora, good morning po! May emergency exploratory laparotomy po tayo, paakyat na po patient sa OR" *sigh* yan na sinasabi ko.

"Give me 10-15 minutes, i'll be there"

I took a bath for 8 minutes, grabbing something to eat? Naah, mamaya na. Though, mukhang matagal ang exlap ko ngayon.. Just going to ask my secretary to buy me a to-go food.

I still have 5 minutes, buti nalang malapit lang yung ospital.

"hello, yes, ma'am..okay lang ba magpabili sa starbucks? Yeah, the usual. Make sure to check na on the rocks yung order ah, make it 6 shots this time, yes. And also, kahit french toast lang, i'll be in the OR in 3 minutes"

Faster than the speed of light pa ang peg ko today! Jusko hahahah basang-basa buhok ko, lamig na lamig katawan ko pero kailangan eh. I ran like I was having labor pains! Quickly changed into my scrubs suit inside the OR complex.

"andiyan na si doktora"

While i was putting my hair cap and mask...

"Okay, endorse the patient quickly, asan yung clerk?" the clerk quickly glanced at me as she approached me with her clipboard

"Ma'am. We have patient E.V, 49 years-old male was brought to the ER due to gunshot wound at the left gluteal area. NOI, TOI, POI DOI: 10 minutes prior to consult, patient was on the roof of their house, when they heard a gunshot wound, patient was yelling for help as the wound eviscerated on the right lower quadrant, near the umbilicus. Smoker with 10 pack years po. Patient was awake at the ER with vital signs of BP 90/60, HR 67, Temp of 33.5C, RR of 24 and O2 sat of 90%, patient was on FM at 5-6 lpm po"

"thank you. Okay, let's start"

We said a little prayer as always prior to the operation.

"Hey, Glen!" my anesthesiologist and classmate back in MedSchool

"Another day to save lives?"

"hahahaha alam mo naman. Paano ba yan mag-Gen anesth ka? Smoker yan hahah kaya mo nayan"

"Magagawan natin ng paraan yan"

The operation went on for 15 hours straight and i am sure, my forking coffee doesn't taste good now huhuhu gutom na akooooooo

The operation went well and I informed the relatives of the patient that everything is going to be alright.

"doktora, magrrounds po ba kayo ngayon? May patient po kasi nagrrequest po sa inyo pero from ortho dept po eh"

Ortho department? What for? They have their own surgeries and unless, abdominal yung case, hindi yan ma-rerefer sa akin.

"special case to doc eh. Mukhang kilala kayo ng patient"

I changed into my white coat and brought my coffee to my clinic. Mamaya nanaman kita maiinom haaaay. I went to the wards, the patient who was asking for me was confined at the premium suites.. Mayaman. I checked the chart and putangina...

I cleared my throat and took a deep breath as i knocked at the door.

"come in!"

"Good morning, I am Doktora Gòmez po, you requested for my service?"

Hindi pa ako nakakalapit, kumbaga, gusto ko i-ngudngod yung mukha ko sa chart at wag nalang magpakita ng mukha.

"hey"

"uhm. I am a Surgeon not specializing in Orthopedics"

"I know. But, I want you to be one of my doctors"

"You're so unbelievable, Raven"

"You're sooooo lovable, Gòmez"
