Imaginary Friend

Life was great. Well, if you could call it a life. I just followed my best friend around constantly. It was nice. He learned so much, and we played pirates all the time. He made sure that I got food, even though I can't really eat it. His mother would eat it for me, which was very sweet of him. And best of all: He believed that I was real when no one else did. We were together. Just me and him. "Alex and Fred". The two of us were best friends.

And then he went to junior high.

He suddenly started to ignore me. He made so many other friends. I was surprised that he believed in me for this long, most kids his age have usually forgotten about me by now. But it still hurt. It always hurts, watching my friends grow up and move on. Every kid was another heartbreak. I mean, I'm with them since they were born. I be whatever the kid wants me to be. The perfect friend.

But Alex was different. He believed in me for so long, and it was hard. But that was the least of my worries.

I was fading.

Which meant I was getting a new kid. I'd probably never see Alex again. I was almost crystal clear, and Alex couldn't hear me as well.

He was sitting on his bed, browsing on his phone. I sat up from the chair I had been sitting on, pondering and looking down at my disappearing hands. Tears were forming. I sat next to him, and put my hands on his shoulders, but he wouldn't acknowledge me. I shook him. He looked up.

"Alex, you're forgetting me!" He blinked. He blinked again, then looked down at his phone. The tears slid down my face. "P-please!" I tried to blink away my tears, but it wasn't working. "I-I can't lose you!" He ignored me. He was forgetting.

I gasped as my legs started to disappear completely. "Alex! Talk to me. I'll be gone forever!" He looked up at me, and then back down to his phone, which slowed the process of my disappearance. "Look at me again!" My voice was excited, but I knew it wasn't going to last. It wasn't going to work, he was going to forget me, and I was going to go. There was nothing I could do. The tears started again, heavier this time. "N-N-NNo please A-Alex!" I looked up at his face. "It's me, Fred!"

"Who's Fred?" He asked, not even looking at me as I faded away, moving on.
