Years flew by like the blowing wind and before the blink of an eye, James was fourteen years old. He was undoubtedly possessed of a great talent in singing, much like his father. His melodious tone and charming semblance earned him applause from even the toughest of critics. He had, undeniably, made me a proud mommy. Though he considered himself 'a big boy', he still kissed my cheeks and cuddled up with me. I too showered him with kisses, hugs and a most meticulous set of compliments.
Early one evening, James returned home and stood awkwardly in the kitchen. Knowing that he wanted to talk to me, I ushered him to the living room and looked at him expectantly.
"Mom..." he drawled.
"Yes, James?"
"Can I...um," he stammered as a warm blush creeped up his face."-Like, gooutonadate?"
I chuckled. No matter how close I get to my little monster, I am never close enough.
"Jamie Bun, of course. You know I trust you. Enjoy yourself, okay?" I gushed.
James' stiff posture tranquillised visibly and I caught sound of a soft 'thank god'.
"Now tell me, Jamie, who is this lucky girl?" I said with a wink.
"Jessica, Jessica Williams. I don't think you know her."
"Well, is that all you'll tell your dear mommy!" I said with a pout, feigning disappointment.
"Ok, dude chill" he said as he shrugged his shoulder and cracked a small grin. "Jessica is in my physics and PE classes. She has blonde hair and grey eyes, she's quite tan. She is a cheerleader and very sweet. And oh well, I kinda asked her out today."
"Aw! My baby is growing so fast! The next time I look at you, you'll probably be married leaving your poor mommy all alone."
"-Well James, you better get back to whatever you were doing. Or do you have to leave for your date already?"
"Actually, it's tomorrow. So there's nothing much to do today. I'll just finish my homework, I guess."
"Please do, sweetie." I walked to him and kissed his cheek.
God screwed up my life damn well, but he sure made up for it all.
