A Short Story
There was once a beautiful unicorn. All the other horses loved her, and so did every other animal in the forest. She knew she was special. She went around thinking that she was the best and everyone should worship her. She wasn't being mean, that's just how it was. She was always polite to the hedgehogs ang squirrels, never unkind to the deer or rabbits and always smiled and nodded to the butterflies and birds.
She was never happy though. Her horn was her pride and joy. It healed all wounds, helped guide lost animals, and even mended broken hearts. But because the horn was so long and sharp, she could never be close to anyone without hurting them. Her mother had been a regular dappled grey and had been amazed at the unicorn's lovely features. But because of her horn, had not gotten close to her in years. She could have no friends or lovers, for fear of hurting them.
One day, there were hunters in the forest. They were hunting deer but hit a mare instead. The unicorn tried to heal her wounds but couldn't. Then the unicorn noticed something: hiding behind the dead mare, was a small filly. The small horse tried to go to the unicorn, but the unicorn backed away. "I don't want to hurt you!" she couldn't even heal a wound; how could she help this filly? But the little thing would not leave the unicorns side. She followed her to the creak, and the caves and even into the river. Finally, the unicorn stopped trying the push her away. She realized she had come to love the little horse. But how could she take care of her much longer?
The unicorn had made her choice. Even though the pain was blinding, and it felt like her head was splitting open, her horn, hermost prized possession and the jewel of the forest, was cut off. The unicorn was finely free to love. She hadn't needed her horn to heal the filly's broken heart, or her own.
