▇▇ THEY HAUNT HIM EVERY NIGHT.
ever since he woke up in town, the dreams had never stop.
a car is speeding at him and he lifts his hand as if it's going to save him.
it does. the car disappears. instead, there is a deer. it is staring at him. somehow, this is more terrifying than the car. but, this was not a deer. something made it look off. it's mere presence set alarms in his brain. they're telling him to run again. the ringing begins and the world starts to shake. it's here.
when he wakes up, the deer lies dead in his room. the neighbor across the street says that it was a birthday present from the devil and it meant that a hellhound was watching him.
it's for safety, they say.
he had never told her his birthday before. he had never met the woman, but he had chills going down his back when he was met with her red-rimmed eyes, hollow cheeks, sharp cheekbones, cutting shadows on her face. he doesn't deny anything she says, fear of death.
happy birthday, the town says to him.
the two words had never made him feel such dread.
happy birthday.

▇▇ HE HEARS SOMETHING BEHIND HIM.
he turns around, the trees are closing in on him, he knows it. he can feel them moving. the leaves are saying something to him, whispering, almost like a chant.
he wonders what he will be cursed with today.
he's suffocating. dizziness takes over him again. like an old friend. the birds know something he does not. he wakes up under a willow tree.
