Joseph was still unconscious, but Dr. Damien was very optimistic about his recovery and insisted that I leave to attend the ceremony. The Community was cleared, everyone had already been ushered to the arena, so I quickly made my way through town. I wanted to see Arilya before everything started to give her some encouragement.
The entrance to the northern chamber was blocked by two long, hefty mermen. "Excuse me, gentlemen. I would like to go in and speak with one of the maids. I am her Mentor."
"The Council gave very strict instructions not to let anyone in except the mothers."
"I am on the Council."
"We know you resigned your post."
Knowing I could not compete with their strength, I decided not to push my luck. I did not want to be banned from the ceremony, or worse, the Community, for causing trouble. Reluctantly, I swam away, heading for the closest entrance to the Community seating. I was not prepared for what I saw when I got there.
