New Origins

Chapter Two

When I stand infront of the council Carter, takes his place at the semi-circle table. He sits at the left end of the table representing the twenty people of the West faction. As he sits under one of only three hanging lights it accentuates his physical features showing the family resembelence between him and Pheonix even more clearly he looks like an older verison of him with blonde matted hair and stuble and lastly the blue eyes that run in the family. To complete the look he wears the same khaki pants as us guardians with a black shirt and belt.

Then there is George our (the central faction) representative. He's a silver haired eccentric looking man, with a matching untamed mustache and short beared. He was wearing a brown leather style wiastcoat over his once white and blue pinstripe shirt with a black bow tie. He's a kind man been through more than most in this city and on that basis despite his age he was voted onto the council. He was also the main deffence teacher before Phoenix took over he had in fact trained him Angie and my brother using what he had learned from world war three.

To George's left is Amaury he was a french immigrant when the apocalypse happened he came to find work but never expected that it would be the last time he would ever leave, or see his family. He's a bitter man with brown hair and matching eyes in his eyes I see sorrow and pain all though he hides it with anger and bitterness. He wears a black shirt and blue jeans and a belt with a gold buckle. I look to my side to see Pheonix he doesn't take his place instead he stands there arms crossed with a frown on his face he's not happy about something. Amaury speaks first "Miriam Masters?"

"Yes"

"You have been chosen for a special mission. You are the first of the new borns?"

"But I-I've only been a guardian for a day why me and not someone else. I mean why not Pheonix or Joshua or even Cain. I mean Cain he's an amazing fighter have you seen him with his katanas" I say nervously

"This is a sensitive mission and one that you must be apart of"

"Why?" l whisper

Amaury sighs "How do you say this..."

"Young lady you where the first to be born in this new damaged world?" George interrupts

"Err...yes I have been told"

"Well I'm sure you're aware those born after the virus was released where born with different abilities, like your ability to read people, your increased agility and molecular vision. Well..." he sighs and takes a break "Many Firstborns are deteriorating it is slow and may take years but its coming"

"We've all ready had a death in the East faction" Amaury adds

"I know this may seem cruel but other than me being the first what has this got to do with me?" I ask

"You where the first to be born yet you have no sign of deteriorating. It seems that the illness is working its way backwards from the youngest to the oldest."

"Isn't that a good thing? And l still dont understand why l have been brought infront of the council to be told this? Why haven't the other Firstborns been told about this?"

George and Carter look at one another Carter replies "Yes, Miriam it is but you see there is an element that could help stop the degrade in Firstborns such as yourself"

"Where is it?"

"It's in a Labatory outside the city."

"How do you know of the Lab and why havent the other guardians seen it on patrols?"

"I use to work in this lab its on the southside of the walls most unexplored by the lay guardians"

I stood in silence shocked for a minute the southside of the walls where unexplored for a reason they where said to be ridden with the infected. But most shockingly I and most of Neo-Genesis had been told that he was a doctor before the apocalypse had happened Why would the leaders of the city strive to keep something as simple as an occupation a secret? Especially now there where basicly only three occupations healer, guardian or farmer. 

"Why do I have to go?"

"You can go and retrieve the the vile you can see at a molecular level" Carter stands up and takes an old photo out of a brown envelope and comes to stand in front of me showing me the picture of a what looks like a child had tried to draw a circle but had some how managed to add four evil looking spikes to each one "If you see cells like these in a green-yellow liquid you will have the right vile it has a purple cap to it"

"What about you or Pheonix? Why cant you go?"

"We don't want to cause a commotion in the city if two of its most important figures go dissapearing for a couple of days they will know somethings wrong. Same reason why most Firstborns aren't aware of the disease so far."

" I can't go alone"

"Ofcourse you won't be alone lass" George

"Joshua, Cain and another newborn with your abilities will acompany you" Amaury

"Only four of us?"

"The smaller the group the faster you move and it will also be less likey for you to be spotted by any infected if your in a small group"

"When would I leave?"

"Two weeks the max"

"l'll think about it" I sigh l allready know what my answer is.
