Hello reader! I hope you enjoy my first attempt at a mystery novel! If seeing a murder happen makes you uncomfortable, feel free to skip to chapter 1.

A man walks through the streets of Whitechapel, his wooden soles clicking along the cobbled path. He turns to walk along Buck's Row where a woman is standing. The man stops and feels the knife under his leather apron. He smiles. Tonight would be the night. He would have to work fast, the patrol would be along soon.
He steps up to her. His hands wrap around her throat. He squeezes tight. The victim gasps and tries to get out of his grasp. She fails. He is too strong.
Taking one last gasp she goes limp. Dead. He lies her on the ground and pulls out his knife. He slits the throat from the left but does not go all the way. He starts again. This time it is from ear to ear. He goes deep enough to slice all tissue, right to the vertebrae. Blood does not splatter, it would be a clean scene, baffling the coppers.
He moves to the lower half of the corpse. Lifting her skirts he stabs her in the abdomen. Again, many more times making jagged cuts that slice through tissue.
He freezes. He hears footsteps approaching. He quickly pulls the skirt down to cover the wounds and steps back into the shadows.

A man walks up to the woman, but does not notice the throat. Believing she is just in a drunken stupor, he goes to fetch the cops. He does not see a man in the shadows following him.

A few moments later, a police constable appears on the scene. His flashlight immediately sees the throat. PC John Neil pronounces her dead, though little blood is seen. He concluded that because she is still warm the murder happened recently.
He waves over PC Thrain who goes to fetch a doctor. It is 3:47 am.
