Souless

The large ornate double doors seem to stare at me as much as I stare at them. I had been confident up until this point, leaving my hometown, on the train to the Inkwell Isles, and on the short walk from the station... but here I was at The Devil's Casino, staring at the doors.

I summon all my courage, I know I can't go back to what I know, so I knock, albeit rather timidly. After about half a minute I grab the handle and push the door open myself.

Stepping into the casino I can see workers and all manor of people running around setting up games and polishing drinking glasses, and way at the back of the casino sitting on a throne was the unmistakable figure of The Devil.

"Can I help you, Miss?" A tall man with a dice for a head asks me. I take in his 3 piece suit, neat pencil mustache, and a dice for a head, now that's something you didn't see everyday!

"I'm here to apply for the singing job." I reply, I am a taller girl but I still wasn't as imposing as this man.

He rolls his eyes and snorts "Look Kid, I can tell by the way you dress you come from the country, from a poor family, and you've probably only ever sung at church so you've run away! So why in Inkwell Hell would I hire you?" He asks rather snarkily.

"Well you're right-"

"Then go back home." He cuts me off.

"You haven't even heard me sing!" I say

"Be my guest!" He says gesturing to the musicians onstage who are setting up. I set down my suitcase. I get up on stage and start talking to the band, after a while we decide on a song.

I step up to the microphone "My name is Melody Arpeggio and you can consider this my job interview." I say, as I glare at the Dice man.

((AN: OK so play the song here, i know its not a 1930's song but let's pretend))

By the time I'm finished I had amassed a small crowd of workers who all clapped for me. I give a small curtsy and direct the applause to the band behind  me.

I go back up to the rude dice man with a somewhat smug smile on my face.

"Not bad kid, but now the big boss wants to talk to you." He says

"You don't mean?"

"You'll have powers beyond your wildest dreams, fans shouting your name, all the money and the riches you could possibly want..."

The scenery around me changes as The Devil creates an illusionary scene, suddenly my clothes change, I'm in a form fitting floor length dress and a pure white fur coat, a long cigarette holder between my fingers. In front of me is a sea of flashing camera lights and people shouting my name. This was all I ever wanted.

"You'll no longer be a nameless farm girl, you'll be the famous singer you've always wanted to be" I hear his voice right in my ear.

"Just sign, Melody." He says, the illusions melt away and a pen is held out to me. And In his clawed hand he holds a contract.

I tentatively take the pen. I step forward and steel my nerves, I sign upon the dotted line and the scroll disappears once I'm done.

"You've made a smart choice, working for me" He chuckles deviously

"Take her to her quarters, King Dice" The Devil says waving me away.

A hand finds my back and I'm pulled towards a back room and lead down a long hallway. I take a moment to look at the man I now know as King Dice. Everything about his outfit was purple and white, except his shoes which were black with white spats.
