Chapter Five
I woke up especially early for my daily jog. Cranking up my iPod I jogged around the neighborhood a few times until the sun had completely risen. I was tired and sweaty but I didn’t want to go back home where I would have to face Jason.“Isn’t it a little early for you to be awake?” I heard a familiar voice.
“I could say the same to you Derek,” I shot back then noticed his golden retriever on a leash. “I thought you’d be tired from the beach party.”
“Just the same thing I was about to ask you,” he laughed. “I was just out for a walk with Chester here,” he explained, looking down at his dog with a smile. His bright smile made me brighten up and I noticed his dimples for the first time. He looked at me and chuckled.
“That’s a cute dog you got there,” I complimented and crouched down to give the dog a nice friendly rub. He dog sniffed my hand and took more interest by licking it.
“She likes you,” Derek chuckled.
“She?” I looked up at him while Chester was still licking my hand. “I thought her name was Chester.”
“It is. That’s the irony of it,” Derek grinned and I shook my head but laughed.
“You’re unbelievable," I said but I couldn't help but smile.
“So I’m told,” Derek winked. He was the captain of the football team so he probably got compliments like that. I laughed at his cockiness. Unlike Jason's, I knew Derek wasn't really like that.
“I didn’t mean it as a compliment,” I snickered. He only shrugged and gave me a lop-sided grin.
“Hey, do you want to watch a movie later tonight?” he suddenly asked, catching me off guard. He was a jock and I was just a snobby prep schooled music kid. He took my shocked silence as a no. “I mean you’re probably busy with Jason Whitlock or something.”
“No, no. A movie would be nice,” I smiled, standing back up to meet his face. Chester jumped up and down excitedly, trying to get my attention.
“She dog seems to really like you,” Derek laughed. “Come on Chester,” he called, trying to get her attention and had to pull her leash in order to make her stop jumping on my leg. “I’m sorry. I’ll pick you up at seven?”
“Ok, I’ll see you then,” I waved before he jogged in the opposite direction with Chester following closely after him.
I couldn’t help the stupid grin off my face. Derek was sweet and I really liked him and really looked forward to the date but with Jason reappearing in my life again, things were beginning to get hard.
“I don’t like that grin on your face.” It was Jason who greeted me back home. I ignored his comment and helped myself with a bowl to make cereal. “Oh, so you’re giving me the silent treatment now?” Jason asked, annoyed and hurt.
I simply poured the milk into my bowl, took out a box of Cheerios, and grabbed a spoon from the drawer. I sat down on the char and ate on the dining table, munching the delicious cereal with a hint of honey just the way I liked it for the past two years. Maddie and Derek actually introduced me to this stuff. I used to abhor cereal, wanting to live the high life until…well everything changed.
