Chapter 1
"And today class, not only are we fortunate enough to get a new student, we have two joining us today! So, please go out of your way to help them feel welcome here at Northwood High. Looks like one of them is here now."
If you've ever been the new kid, you know what it feels like to have everyone's eyes on you at once. It's like they're all tearing you limb from limb with just their stares. And that's just when you walk through the door. Introducing yourself is far worse.
"You must be Bayli! I'm Mrs. Young, you're English teacher."
"Hello Mrs. Young. If I may, correct you."
"Did I mispronounce your name? I am so sorry-"
"No, no. Well, not exactly. You see, my name isn't Bayli." And there's the confused look. Right on cue. "Bayli is my cousin."
"Oh! And will she be attending Northwood as well?" I try my best to stifle a laugh. This always happens but I still find it amusing. Instead, I just put on a polite smile.
"He."
"Pardon?"
"Bayli is a guy. And yeah, he's also going here."
"My apologizes. I assumed that was you're name."
"Maxx."
"Maxx?"
"Yes ma'am. I'm Maxx."
"Is it short for Maxine? "
"Nope. My name is just Maxx. Not short for Maxine. Not long for Max with one x. Just Maxx."
"Hello. So sorry to interupt. I got lost."
"And that is Bayli, my cousin."
"Isn't that lovely? Both of you in the same class. Now, if you and Bayli could take your respective seats behind Mr. Levi, we will continue with today's assignment."
As me and Bayli make our way to our seats, I keep my eyes on schedule to avoid any awkward eye contact with my classmates. But I can't help but feel as if someone is looking straight through me and into my soul. I lift my gaze for a few seconds and immediately, our eyes meet. He has a grimace on his face, as if I disgust him or something. I hold his gaze, refusing to be the first to break the eye contact. He turns his head and follows me as I walk past his desk. He gives me what I assume is his signature half smile that must make the female population of Northwood swoon. I just roll my eyes and slide into my seat next to Bayli. He must have seen me because he let's out a low laugh before turning in his seat.
"Did I miss the whole 'I'm Maxx with an extra x and my cousin who is definately of the male species is Bayli' speech?"
"Just by about thirty seconds. "
"Damn it. I missed it last time too."
"Maybe you should stop being a total man whore and not flirt with the office aids at every school our parents transfer us to you wouldn't have to miss it and I wouldn't have to hear you complain about not getting to witness the teacher's reaction."
"Maybe if you actually stood up to those bitches who made your life a living hell we wouldn't have to transfer." Ouch. That hit a soft spot. I mean, I know he's right but did he really have to call me out on it all of the damn time? He is such a jerk. Don't get me wrong. Bayli is my best friend and I love him to death, but he is also the world's biggest asshole when he wasn't his usual sweet and kind hearted self.
"Just shut the hell up Bayli. Seriously, sometimes you are such an asshole, you know that?"
" I try." He replies as he gives me smug grin and flip him off in return. He just shakes his head smiling and turns his attention to the front. I just zone out and doodle along the edge of my schedule for the remainder of the class. I look up every so often just so Mrs. Young doesn't think I'm not paying attention even though that's exactly what I'm doing. The bell rings and chairs scraping on the linoleum floor and the rustling of papers being stuffed into random folders fill the room. I get up from my chair and turn to see that Bayli has already walked out of the classroom. I let out a sigh, grab my schedule from the desk, and walk out of English class. I walk over to my locker and notice that it's left half open? What the hell? I shut it before going to English. I even double checked to make sure is was closed. I just roll my eyes and slam the locker door shut. It doesn't matter. It's not like I have important stuff in there anyway. Just my textbooks. I pull out my phone as I walk into the bathroom. No service? Are you friking serious? Of course my phone doesn't get service in this school. I slide my phone into my bag and I face the mirror to assess my reflection. I run my fingers through my hair and make sure my skirt and belt aren't crooked. I look at myself one last time before I let out a sigh and walk out of the bathroom. I'm already over all of this new kid bullshit and it isn't even third period yet. It's going to be a long ass day.
