Chapter One (Edited)

"With the use of a protractor, or any other equipment that can measure angles from a distance, any able individual can work out the height of any cliffs or light-houses while at sea," Mr. Johnson's voice seemed to drone on for what seemed to be forever, taking each example from the worn text books the school insisted the students use. Why update books, when students can still see the fading paragraphs of trigonometry. Jenna had heard it all before, ever since her junior year, when her father signed her up for his class, just one of the many pros of having a dedicated math teacher as a father.

From the day she could talk, her dad taught her simple math equations, already training her towards the math teacher dream he had for his only child. He must've missed the memo.

Carelessly taking down the bright blue example from the board, her thoughts were interrupted by the middle aged man, "Jenna," he frowned, his caterpillar-like eyebrows arched downwards. "I have to admit, I didn't expect you to get nineteen out of the possible twenty." With out looking up to him, she shrugged her shoulders.

"No need to worry, I'm sure my dad will help you improve your teaching skills," She smirked, only imagining the offended look on her teacher's face. "That's why he's the director of the mathematics curriculum, isn't he?"

"Keep up that attitude and I'll see that you get all the extra help you need in detentions, Miss Dustan, I expect a hundred and ten percent on that math final." He mused aloud, moving on the student behind her.

Sure thing, she thought to herself before checking the time, the session was almost over. Great, lunch time. Her long fingers gripped around her copy of the Hobbit, she'd always preferred Bilbo's story, and her math book, which was covered in scrawled doodles on the front cover. Pure evidence of her boredom. Avoiding Mr Johnson, she cut off one of her fellow students before sprinting down the hall so she wasn't caught up in the crowd of sweaty, testosterone-filled boys, and sunlight deprived girls.

Her locker was only a short walk from the designated math area, commonly referred to as M-block by most of the teaching staff. Her stereotypical blond-hair boyfriend was pressed up against the locker beside hers, his eyes looking down to his iPhone, set on passing every single level on Angry Birds. His jaw line almost calling to be caressed by her finger tips. Everything about him was simply immaculate - the way he walked, the way he smirked, his teeth, his pianist fingers - or would have been if it wasn't for his case of mono.

The case of mono he didn't get from her, his girlfriend.

What an ass.

With a swing in her hips, Jenna made sure she appeared confident as usual, not at all bothered by his temporary 'illness' as he so kindly explained. in fact, she made sure not to acknowledge him at all while she twisted her lock clockwise to match the combination numbers. "Jen, what took you so long? I've passed like three levels waiting for you." He questioned, her only response was an eye roll, her lips opening slightly to release a subtle sigh. "Seriously, you need to pull up your act."

He was too absorbed in his pathetic obsession to realise the locker door swing open, which was suppose to hit him in the face, preferablly the nose, but he was standing too far off. Maybe I should pay attention in math. The green metal door slammed open, shocking Derek for a moment, finally he put the game away, meeting Jenna's furrowed eyebrows. Her slightly cracked lips pursed together in anger. How dare he tell me to work on the relationship!
