I pulled into my driveway, ‘Ugh. Michael’s car is here. Great.’ I sighed as I stepped out of my car. I breathed in through my teeth, bearing through the pain. I step through the door and see Michael standing near the kitchen entrance.
“Hello Desiree.” “Hi Michael.” I walk past him, through my bag on the couch, and start towards the stairs. “Where do you think you’re going?” He glares in my direction. “To my room, to change. Problem?” I ask snobly. “There is, actually. I just got off the phone with your principal. You got caught skipping school…again. You know you’re smart. You know you’re a good student. So, why do you choose to start acting up now?” He starts walking towards me. As he gets closer, I can see the anger in his eyes. “I asked you a question. Answer me!” now he’s yelling. But still, I stayed silent. “Answer me you worthless slut!” Worthless slut. He slaps me. Hard. So hard, it knocks me to the ground. I started getting teary eyed. “Awh, do you think crying is going to save you? Do you think that if you start crying mommy will come and save you? Well, you thought wrong bitch!” Instead of slapping me this time, he kicks me right in the ribs. I grab my rips from the pain.
I heard the door open and see my mom walk in. ‘Hi…mom...” is all I manage through my sobs. She ignores me, like usual, and walks towards Michael. I see this as my chance to escape. I run up the stairs towards my room as fast as my bruised body would let me. Once I reach the top of the staircase, I stumble into my room, closing the door behind me. I slide on the floor, letting my head fall into my hands and knees. I hear Michaels loud, angered stomps getting closer and closer. “Open up Desiree!” I can tell by his voice he’s smirking. “I said open up!” he finally manages to get the door open a little and squeezes through the crack. “Oh, stop crying. It’s not that bad.” I say nothing. I can’t. He intertwines a fist into my hair and yanks me to my feet. “Stop crying!!” He slaps me again, this time a lot harder. “Come on.” He says while dragging me to the edge of the staircase. He just holds me there for what seemed like an eternity laughing. Next thing I know, he pushes me down the stairs. I flip and twist, feeling myself bruise up on the way down. All I can hear is Michaels psychotic laugh fade in and out as everything goes black.
When I wake up, I instantly now where I am. The hospital. “Desiree?” I hear my mom’s voice to the left of me. I just ignore her. “Desiree, look I’m really sorry. I didn’t know he would actually go that far. I’m sorry.” It’s silent for a moment and then she begins again. “I need to tell you something...” I don’t know why that caught my attention but it did, so I turn towards here, even though it hurts. “I called your father last night after that incident and asked if he would take you in for a couple of months while I get things sorted out with Michael. He agreed, so you’re leaving tomorrow morning. You’re flight takes off at nine. I already have your bag packed and everything and the doctors are releasing you tonight. I know it’s a lot to take in but I hope you understand...” I look at her for a moment before I say, “Fine. But if I like it over there, I’m staying.” I doubted I was going to like it but that’s all I could think of to say, “Okay.” Is all she said as she got up and left.
As she closed the door behind her, I closed my eyes to try and get some more rest, but before I could fall asleep, a doctor walked in. “Hi Desiree, I was your overnight doctor. You’re doing a lot better so we can release you now. Just be sure to be careful around sharp objects. Here’s some pain medicine I want you to take. Take 1 pill in the morning and 1 at night. You only have to take it for a month.” He walked closer to me and handed me a brown paper bag. “I’m going to let your mother in now so you can go home.” “okay.” I said quietly, almost whispering. As soon as the doctor walked out, my mom came back in. I started to get out of bed and when I sat up I winced in pain. My mother walked over to help me up but I shoke my head. I didn’t want that deceiving lady touching me. She just stood there, waiting for me. When I finally got up, I followed her out the doors and to the car.
The car ride was long and silent. When we finally got to the house, I got out of the car and went straight to my room, not saying anything to my mother. As I walked up the stair, holding my ribs from the pain, memories from last night passed through my mind. I stopped for a while, trying to get them off my mind. Finally, I made it to my room. I saw the suitcase my mom had packed and looked at it. Why did she ever let these things happen to me? I walked over to my bed, not even caring to change as I was in too much pain, and laid down. I thought of all the possibilities that could come with moving in with my father and after hours of thinking, I finally dozed off.
