"Don't make it a routine."
Of course that sentence had been stuck in my head ever sense Sonny spoke it. Replaying and replaying, over again and again in my head with flashin' lights. It was a strict command. Warning me not to let whatever happen to me, happen again.
One time things were suppose to happen one time, right?
Well that's what I thought, but apparently Joey didn't think so. I was walkin' the hallway mindin' my business with Mario and Slick until we turned into the staircase to see, Joey, and a few of his buddies from the other day standin', arms crossed with looks of trouble written all over their faces.
Our conversation quickly died as we stopped to a stand still in a dead silence, face to face with the biggest jerk-off known to my high school. I was surprised more than I was terrified, but I didn't let him know that with a straight face and a silent stand off between our groups.
"Hey, Calogero."
I wanted to say somethin' back, but I couldn't speak. For some reason my mouth went dry and clamped shut, and all I could do was stare and listen to what Joey had to say before he uncrossed his arms and took a step in front of me so we were face to face.
I kept my cool.
"Aye, c'mon Joey.." Mario softly spoke,"..Not so close." He tried to defend me while lookin' at my intimidator who'd gave him a hard look.
"I'm sorry who are you?"
The remark was rather harsh and belittling enough to make Mario shrink back, losin' his chance to be hero, but I couldn't blame him. Joey was taller and stronger then us and he sure as hell could take on all three of us without any help from his crew.
Returnin' his cold eyes back to mine I felt my stomach flip once again with that sick feeling of what could happen at this moment and what Joey and his crew were capable of.
"Aye, what's the matter with you?" Joey asked, eyes narrowed into mine," the other day you were man enough to call me out on what I said, and now your all limp and lifeless- look at this fellas" he spoke, smirk dancin' on his lips as he briefly turned his head back to his crew to see them smirkin' and hidin' muffled snickers before he returned his eyes back to me.
"You gonna just stand here and say nothin', hm?" He nudged, givin' me a push to the chest that jostled me a bit.
From the corner of my eye I saw Mario give a flinch as he watched helplessly. Though I didn't get to see Slick on my other side, I did hear him bark.
"Aye, keep your fuckin' hands to yourself a'right?" He growled, glaring at Joey who didn't seem phased by his bullshit.
"Stay in line and shut the fuck up"
"Go fuck yourself"
Seeing that things were escalating and voices were bein' raised from tension that was building between the two I had no other choice but to speak up,
"What do you want, Joey." I finally asked, breakin' the tension between the two and causin' the attention to be back on me.
