Charlie Swan was in the profession for a long time. His dark curls were graying at that point, and his chocolate eyes were surrounded with lines, of age and laughter both.
But the creases in his forehead as he looked at a small blonde girl wrapped in a black coat that was obviously the younger police officer's coat were looking almost permanent for Seattle's chief.
The young cop conversed with her as the blue blanket covered her lower half of the body like an ocean no one else could baptize in.
"She is the kid?" Charlie's voice managed. George Hawkins, Seattle's chief, nodded. "She's..."
"She's fourteen," George said, as some of Charlie's officers started helping, as they were supposed to. "Saw the whole thing. After she finished telling up everything, she refused to speak to anyone but Jordan over there. Good fella, new. Guess he seems young enough for her to consider him a friendly face."
"She's a teenager," Charlie breathed a laugh. "He's handsome. That's all there probably is to it."
"Possibly," George grinned. "How's your daughter doing?"
Charlie's mind flooded with memories of his daughter and granddaughter. Bella moved away from Forks a few years back, all of the Cullens did.
She kept in touch, but just barely. She was happy with her family, studying Biology at Harvard at the time. Jacob and Renesseme were traveling Europe, and Renee was of course with Phil, happily married.
Sue was perfect as ever, but she was too involved in La Push to move to Forks- even as close as the two were- and as the Chief, Charlie couldn't bring himself to leave Forks himself.
So even ten years after they started dating, they couldn't bring themselves to do more.
At almost 51, Charlie was still not re-married, even though he loved someone dearly. Why couldn't love be enough?
"Okay," he choked out. "So what's her name? Any relatives?"
"Name's Riley Johnson, her mother's an only child and her father's brother is the only other relative."
"Great, and?"
"He's right there," George pointed at the three bodies in the bags. Her parents and uncle.
"Grandparents?"
"Three of them dead, one just celebrated his ninety-sixth birthday. He's deaf and in no condition to take care of anyone."
"Foster care then?" Charlie frowned. At fourteen it's hard to find a family. He was doubtful anyone would adopt her.
Riley's blue eyes turned to them.
Charlie looked at her with nothing but interest. She was looking at him as though expecting him to say something. He wanted to say something.
So he did.
"Tell you what, I'll open the whole process down from Forks. She could stay at my home for now."
George looked at him incredulously. Sure, he had a free room since his daughter was married and out of town, he was dating Sue for the past ten years so he was gonna have help if he needed, and it was better than shoving her to the system and hope for the best for now.
But still.
Chief Swan taking in a teenager he hasn't even spoken to?
George smiled a shit eating grin.
"You might wanna reconsider after you speak to Riley over there."
Oh, he had no idea what he was in for.

HI!
So I am actually super excited about this! It revolves around Charlie's life ten years after the ending of Breaking Dawn and shows a different kind of Charlie.
I was planning on making it cute short chapters? But then I investigated Charlie's character up a bit and... yeah... It will be hard writing.
So be prepared.
Riley Johnson's face claim is Sabrina Carpenter ( I really wanted to call Riley Sabrina, and joke about her mother being really into Sabrina the teenage witch, and that is why she practices bitchcraft, but they I decided she was gonna be portrayed by Sabrina and not Dove Cameron, so... I felt like it would be too many Sabrinas.)
See you soon! xx
