You were the first face he saw when he woke up from his 70-year nap. You were the calm voice that acted sort of like a therapist for him after Nick Fury had brought him back inside to talk about things. It was by complete accident that you happened to run into the Captain America while he wallowed through the empty halls of the building in the middle of the night. But something, something, had told you to wake up and go for a walk.
You peered around the corner and, sure enough, it was definitely him. Your mind fought over what to do, but he made the decision for you.
"Lurking behind the corner isn't going to keep you hidden from me," said Steve Rogers, turning to look at you. His brilliant blue eyes met yours, and he offered you a sad smile. "The serum makes me aware of even the tiniest of sounds, I heard you walking and I heard you stop. Can I help you, Miss...?"
"Agent Y/N L/N. And..." You paused, fiddling with your fingers as you finally walked around the corner to stand a few feet in front of him. "I guess I couldn't sleep. I don't really know why. I was sleeping fine but suddenly I was awake and wanted to take a walk so here I am."
He chuckled, staring down at his feet and not making eye contact. "Guess it's fate that you stumbled across me, then."
"Yeah, suppose so..." You shifted awkwardly on your feet, not comfortable with the awkward tension that was filling the hallway around the two of you. However, you didn't feel confident in your voice to not fail you if you tried to talk.
As if sensing your unease, Steve spoke. "Hey, since you're up, would you mind giving me a small tour of this place? Not sure how long I'll be here so I guess I should learn where the main things are like the kitchen and laundry."
You couldn't help but laugh at his silly request for a tour guide. Although this was a compound, filled with people, he made it seem like it was just your regular house. "There's a kitchen and laundry chute on every floor that has rooms for agents to stay in if they're living on base, so that covers this floor and the two above this," you explained, beckoning him to follow, which he gladly did. "The layouts of the floor are the exact same."
"Meanwhile, all the meeting room floors have a small kitchenette area, it's basically just for coffee and maybe heating up food if you brought it. There's also a small sink but it's barely big enough for a dinner plate." Your comment earned you a small chuckle from Steve, which brought a small smile to your lips. "The kitchen's just right up ahead," you responded, leading him into the room.
You watched as Steve took in the whole room. It wasn't as big as he had imagined, but, then again, when would a busy agent staying here for only a few days want to cook when the city was filled with all kinds of food? There was a fridge and freezer duo complex, a stove and oven, a small island, and a few cupboards that were probably empty outside of maybe a cup and plate. There was also a small wooden table that was able to sit up to four people, but even at that, it would be cramped.
"Seems pretty small," he commented.
"Yeah, not many people really stay here in the compound unless they live elsewhere and are here for a meeting." You shrugged and walked over to one of the walls where the laundry chute sat. "For your clothes, you'll put them in a laundry bag that closes and throw it in here. Laundry is located in Basement Level 1."
Steve took to examining the cupboards, where he located two mugs and a tin of coffee grounds. He threw a look over his shoulder at you and motioned to the coffee tin. "How about a cup?"
Smiling, you walked over and pulled down the coffee grounds. "It sounds lovely. Why don't you go sit down and I'll get coffee brewing. I'm sure you wouldn't know how to start the coffee machine. I barely know how to work it."
