“Is it over…” I squeaked.
“No. We must kill them,” said Theo. I weakly raised my head.
“No!”
They all turned to me.
“No?” gasped Betta. “Dis will end da curse! We must kill da child of evil!”
“Not both!” I hastily explained. “Only one! Only one is a demon!”
“Jimmi we don’t know which one. What if we kill the wrong one? It’ll mature quickly and be greater than we can handle.”
“Let me see them,” I pleaded, tugging on my restraints. They all looked hesitant. Finally Theo walked over and slowly undid my ties. As soon as my wrists got free I rolled the joints around and waited for my ankles to get free. Theo stepped back and watched me attempt to sit up. The pain of my “surgery” was aching and I felt stiff. Daniel rushed to my side and helped me sit up, making sure the stitches don’t rip. He helped me put my feet to the floor. I felt like Ariel getting her legs for the first time.
Daniel led me towards the table where the babies lay crying and squirming. A circle of salt lay before them and I noticed they were wrapped in silk blue cloth. Candles surrounded the table and made it look like a satanic sacrificing; the fireplace behind it only added a glare. I staggered towards them carefully; my eyes adorning each one. They almost killed me, but I’ve never felt as connected to them even when they were in my stomach for four months.
“Careful Jimmi…” whispered Daniel as he slowly let go of my arm. Tears streaked my face as I stood before them. They came from me. These two tiny beings came from me. Both are premature, but they’re the size of full term babies.
I picked up the one on the left with quivering arms. I examined its face at arm’s length and it continued to cry. I brought it close and rested its head over my chest. As I did the baby stopped crying; our heartbeats in sync and it looked up at me. Big, blue adoring eyes stared back at mine in wonder. Tears brim my eyes (surprised I had any left).
“It’s this one,” I turned towards my audience of distraught adults. “This one’s mine.”
“How do you know?” whispered Theo.
I held in a sob and smiled down at my baby. “It has my eyes.”
After a moment of silence the other baby screamed louder. Loud enough to strike fear and make us all jump. Horror filled my gut and then the floor cracked. I heard the wood splinter from under me and my leg fell through. I clenched my baby tighter to my chest as my left foot dropped under.
“Help!” I screamed. The trio ran to my side and I handed the baby to Daniel. “Take it away! Far away! I don’t care where you go just don’t let them take it!” Daniel nodded hastily and ran off. I was vag deep in the floor and every time I moved my jeans ripped and exposed my skin to the jagged wood.
“Ow! Guys get me out of here!” The baby screamed louder and we heard a thud and a clink. We all looked over towards the table. One of the candles standing next to the table dropped to the floor. We stared in paralyzing horror as the flame caught on the dry wood and discarded papers.
“Guys get me out!” I watched in deep horror while Betta and Theo tried breaking the floor to make the hole wider. The flame caught on quickly to the furniture and ate the curtains.
“Fuck it Jimmi you have ta pull! Fuck da legs what’s a bit more pain to ya!” yelled Theo. His voice was frightening and I dared not make him angrier. Without thinking I heaved my leg out and felt every cut, every rip going up my leg caused by the rotting wood. The pain was excruciating and ran up my leg and side. Theo hoisted me on his shoulder and I closed my eyes. The cries of the demon baby became deep and demonic, making my hairs stand up.
