As if right on cue, I heard the screeching of car tires and the frightened and angry screams below. I peered down. There was a runaway car flipping and flying through the air toward a busy parking garage. I grunted and changed course drastically towards the commotion be beneath me. I landed softly in front of the parking garage just as the black car hurtled towards me. I braced myself for the 50 mph impact. 3..2..1.. I jumped, and threw myself at it, catching it in midair. It threw me against the heavy concrete wall of the parking garage, nearly crushing me. But I kicked off and set it down gently. I jumped to the driver's side and gazed at the driver. He was bleeding from a small, shallow cut in his forehead, seemed a little shaken up, but otherwise was fine. His mouth dropped open. "F-F-Flame-Flamethrower!" He stuttered. "Th-thank you!" I smiled consolingly at him. Already sirens were whirring towards us. "You'll be fine, sir. They'll take you to a hospital and get you patched up in a jiffy." He rubbed his eyes, clearly not believing what he was seeing. Grinning, I aimed my shooter at the nearest building and pulled myself up, flying away. I felt an overwhelming sense of satisfaction. This was my purpose. This was what kept me going. I set my eyes on the nearest rooftop, Sears tower, to take a quick breather. Suddenly, I felt my thread break. Weird. But no problemo, I could fix it in a minute. I shot out more with my left hand, when that broke, too. I felt myself losing speed, then begin to fall. I glanced up at hands. A strange webbing covered them, and I couldn't get it off to shoot more thread. Alarm and panic began to spread through me. I couldn't stop myself from plummeting hundreds of feet to what looked like would be my untimely death. I gained more and more speed. 100 feet... 50 feet... 25 feet... 20 feet... I was just closing my eyes and bracing for impact, when I felt a strong arm catch me around the waist. It took me a second to realize it, but I looked up in shock to see--no. No. No, no no no. Absolutely not. There was no way. I blinked rapidly a few times. But no. It was, unfortunately, who I thought it was. Who had caught me was none other than Spiderman. But how? He's practically a legend in Queens. Everyone adores him. All the girls put him in their lockers at school. But not me. Legends don't mean anything to me. If you ask me, the media's just talked him up. It's not like he's so fabulous. But what's bothered me is that our powers have originated from small bugs, and our technology is disturbingly similar, even though I've never copied him. I found out about Spiderman after I made all of my supplies. And what made me angriest was that he was the one who had just shot me out of the sky! So I basically hated Spiderman and whoever his fake identity was. Probably a stupid high school football jock. But I tried not focus on that as we were soaring to the high peak of a community library. We weren't slowing down, though. "Hold on!" he yelled. His voice sounded different than what I'd expected, but I quickly forgot about that. He cut off his webbing and abruptly released me. I went flying, and hit the cement, hard, on my back, but quickly somersaulted and landed easily on my feet, recovering quickly. I spun around in a flash at Spiderman and my hands ignited in flames. He was unsteadily getting to his feet, running the back of his head, when he saw me. He yelped at the sight of my hands. I growled at him. "How dare you--" I started furiously, but he cut me off. "Oh, my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh! I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, I thought you were a villain or something, but then I realized who you were, I mean, Flamethrower, phew!" I frowned, confused, but he kept going. "I'm such a huge fan! I mean, I've studied your work, and it's, it's, phenomenal! I'm sorry about that, I'm really completely mortified right n--" I interrupted him. "Shut up, you idiot, or I'll actually throw flames at you!" The flames licked at my gloves menacingly as he meekly mumbled, "Okay." "Tell me who you are right now, or I'll melt your face off!" His eyes widened in fear and he immediately put up his hands. "I'm Spiderman," he said, clearly confused. "No, I meant your real name,'' I stated bluntly. This was really bothering me, because his voice was sounding increasingly familiar. "I'm sorry, but that's confidential," he said, coming to his senses. I rolled my eyes. "Finally!" I exclaimed, the flames evaporating quickly. I was still mad at him, but my curiosity outweighed my anger. Part of me was slightly flattered at what he had said before. Then I looked down at my thread shooters, still covered in webbing. I scratched at it, but had no luck. "Do... do you mind?" I asked. "Oh, yeah, of course!" He said. I couldn't see it, but I thought he was blushing in embarrassment. He shoved a long finger underneath it and peeled it off. I quickly pressed the power buttons. They lit up and began to vibrate with energy. I smiled, not only at my shooters, but also at the plan that was formulating in my brain. I took a few steps backwards. I needed to start a conversation, though, however painful that might be. Luckily, he did the work for me. "So, uh, how long have you been doing--" at that precise moment, I whirled around and shot an impossibly thin strand of thread at the top of his mask. At lightning speed, it attached and shot back to me. Along with his identity. "Hey!" he protested angrily, but I was too busy gaping in shock. "Peter PARKER?!!!!!!" I shrieked. There was NO WAY. I was literally having a mini heart attack. I choked on my tongue and had to sit down, rather heavily. Peter Parker! The nerd in nearly all of my classes! The one who turned his assignments in days earlier than the due date. I felt like a complete idiot. I looked back up at him. He was groaning at his own stupidity and biting at his bottom lip. His hair had been shaken loose, and a strand of it had fallen into his eyes. His face was burning visibly. For some reason, I thought back to what Natalie had said this morning. 'Oh, come on! He's cute!' I really, really, REALLY hated to admit it, but I guess he kind of was. I felt like I was going to barf. He glared over at me, but then sighed in defeat. "Bold move. Well played." I was immensely surprised. I thought he would be furious at me. I thought he would try to throw me off the edge of the library. Granted, I would obviously win, but still. Then his eyebrows knit together in confusion. "Wait, how do you know me? Should I know you?" I held my breath. He continued. "And that hair... the voice..." I blew out heavily. He had figured me out. Snapping his fingers, he said, "I know. Give it up, Flamethrower. Or should I even call you that?" I smiled grimly. "Fine. I'll take it off." I slowly unbuckled the leather strap and pulled the mask off solemnly. He gasped. "Oh, my gosh. Max Carson?! I had really no idea who you were! I can't believe you fell for it!" It, unfortunately, was my turn to curse myself at my own stupidity. I smacked myself in the forehead. "Screw you, Parker!" I spat angrily at him. He ducked his head. I knew he was smiling at his trick. When he looked back up, though, he was turning red again, for some reason. He began to stutter, again, too. "Well, I guess... we should... you know. Get moving," he finished awkwardly. "Yeah," I agreed, looking at him curiously. His behavior was becoming strange. I slipped my mask back on. Out of the corner of my eye, though, I could see his body relax slightly. Then he glanced at me and remarked, "Hey, you know how well we could do if we teamed up?" I nearly choked, but recovered quickly. I also noticed how he said 'well' instead of 'good'. I smiled the smallest possible bit as I replied. "In your dreams, Parker." And at that, I swung away, the wonderful feeling of flying enveloping me once more.
