Before the Beginning

She walked up to the dreary auto shop, blinded by the blaring sun that relentlessly burned into her eyes as she headed toward the big open garage door in back that promised a refuge of shade, air conditioning, and the smell of gasoline and oil. As she passed under the garage door she squinted, trying to find her destination over the blackness that encompassed most of her vision.

She stumbled almost blindly over to what she assumed was the right workstation, and she had only made it about ten steps before her foot slammed into something on the ground. Hard. A metallic clang rang out through the shop and she didn't have time to try to catch her balance before she went plummeting toward the concrete floor.

Suddenly she felt a hand tightly grab on to her flailing arm and pull her upright. Ouch. It felt like her shoulder almost ripped out of its socket, she had to have been at least halfway to the ground by the time this person grabbed her. Her vision was still dark as she looked up, trying to make out the figure of this person standing before her. She stared at his face, dazed, as the colors slowly started to return. And then she was looking into the green eyes of a man, whose hands were still on her shoulders.

"Are you alright?" He asked with genuine concern etched into the features of his face. She was so stunned, all she could do was stare back with her mouth slightly agape.

Those eyes... She was completely lost in them, remembering childhood days when she would wander through the bright green forests without a care in the world, the cool breeze and the smell of wildflowers all around her. He wore glasses that framed his eyes tastefully and gave him an air of intelligence. He had black hair and a shortly trimmed beard that had flecks of grey hair in it toward his chin. He had full lips for a man... Sexy. His features just seemed to fit together perfectly, like a masterpiece painting in a museum. Every little detail having its own importance to the bigger picture. She was close enough to him to notice his scent, almost similar to the scent of an Abercrombie store, but better. More sophisticated.

"Um... Are you okay..?" He repeated, the lines of concern in his face fading to that of uncertainty as I stared blankly. He dropped his hands back to his sides and took a small step back. Oh my god, SAY SOMETHING! She internally scolded herself for being so awkward all the time. This would be just another embarrassing incident to add to the overflowing list.

"Ye.. Yeah! I'm good! Thanks!" The words tumbled out of her mouth clumsiliy. He laughed a little, all of the concern and uncertainty falling from his face. His voice was only slightly deep, a mesmerising tone. She told herself to get a grip and snap the hell out of it. It was just a guy, goddamn. Something had come over her and she felt ridiculous. Normally her awkwardness only came in small doses. This was an avalanche.

"Well good, you had me worried for a second there. I'm just here getting my car worked on, they told me I could stay in the waiting room but I guess it's good that I didn't. I'm Ryan by the way, in case you wanted to know the name of your rescuer." He said with a wink and an adorable half smile. She giggled a little and the anxiety started to fade from her body.

"Well hello, my great rescuer! What ever would I have done without you?" She said dramatically. They both fell into a fit of laughter, "anyway, my name is-"

"Athena!!!" She heard her boyfriend yell her name from underneath the car he was working on, and she snapped back to reality.
