Time to Party

The streetlights let off an amber glow. Looking up at the darkened sky with tiny lights through the night. Walking home from the hospital. Cuddling myself in my jacket. The glow of a car's headlights shines toward me as I come to a halt. "Scar-Scar, What are you doing in the freezing cold?" Bella shouts out her car window.

"Oh um, sorry I've just gone on... a little walk, yeah that's it... walk" I try to come up with an excuse. I'm not really a liar, but if it means I get to be treated like a human. It's worth the risk.

"Um okay Scar, come on let's get our party on!" I open the door and immediately get overwhelmed by the smell of peppermint.

The drive to the party is short.

As we pull up to the party, music is blasting, people outside smoking and drinking. Things I can't do with cancer. "Come on Scar, let's show these guys how to party" Bella hops out of the car throwing her hands up in the air. I slowly slide down the seat, trying to hide myself from the world but I can't. I put myself in this situation, I can get out of it. I slowly open the door to be welcomed by a chair being thrown out a window. Shattered glass lays out on the deck, what doesn't seem to bother anyone and the music keeps pumping.

'Chug, chug, chug' inside, a mob of people crowd around the living room table.

I push through the crowd to discover Bella in the middle of the crowd. Chugging beer after beer. "Scar, come on and join the party" She is clearly drunk within the first 5 minutes. She attempts to walk towards me but bumps into a guy who catches her like some romantic film.

'What is it with drunk people finding love?' I think about all the rom-com movies I've recently seen. That relationship, if it even starts, will probably only last one day at the most. So why would I listen to a drunk lover? I try to navigate my way through the crowd, refusing every drink that is offered to me. I feel suffocated between these people. I rush to find some fresh air. Outside, the stars are shining against the darkness of the night. Even though it is a lovely view, all I can smell is cigarettes. I've walked into a smoking area. I decide it's probably safer for me inside than out. As I walk inside the music seems to be louder as everyone is singing and dancing with a drink in their hand. A new round of  'Spin the Bottle' has begun and everyone is rushing over to join in. I discover Bella still drinking, held by the waist by her new 'boyfriend'. They start to look at each other and kiss. Disgusting. She sees me staring. "Heya Scar, This is James, isn't he cutttttttte?" her speech is slurred; what she doesn't seem to care about, she starts kissing him again before I can reply. She finally pulls away to realize I'm uncomfortable. "Come have a beer, Scar!" she is attempting to walk over to me again. This time she makes it.

"Okay, fine." one drink can't hurt me, right? I grab a jug of beer and take a sip of it. I have to attempt this tastes pretty good. I take another sip, then another; than another.

The crowd notices me taking my time and starts chanting: "Chug, chug, chug, chug!"

People cheering me on.

When I finish my first drink I feel so alive. See, Lily, I'm fine. I can have more! I keep chugging down drinks left and right. As I go for my what feels like my fifth jug the room starts to spin. As I sway back and forth, losing my sight. The last thing I see is Bella making out with the guy who caught her. The room goes black.

As I attempt to open my eyes I see my usual setting. Hospital emergency room. I turn my head to see Lily's face filled with worry. I try to remember what happened but all I can think about is my heart beat. Silence. I try breathing but struggle and I shut my eyes-

Darkness again.
