This is that secret page you always hope for in a book. The page that continues the story. While this isn't the end of the story, as that would be in the future full length novel Mended Hearts, this is the end of Daniel's story...
-----
Daniel sat by Charlie's side watching as her grieving family said their goodbyes, all the while disbelieving the woman he'd so tenderly held, kissed so lovingly, was gone. Even the precious, impossible use of his voice for that moment seemed to dim in comparison to the disbelieving of Charlotte's death. He reached for a paper and wrote the words she had spoken, filling in the blanks a little in ways he knew she would have wanted. He slid the letter in an envelope and laid the treasure by the heart monitor. His wheelchair made no sound as he rolled down the silent corridor to his room. He lifted himself onto his standard hospital bed and wrote a letter to his mother and one to his pastor. He then bowed his head and lifted a silent prayer before laying back on the cool bed. He closed his eyes and saw Charlie smiling, holding her hands out to him.
"I love you."
He felt a tear roll down his cheek even as a smile lifted the corners of his mouth.
"And I you, my angel."
He died merely an hour after the love of his life, a smile firmly on his face and a silver trail of a tear on his face.
