Twirling his mechanical pencil in one hand Gohan glared down at the jumbled up math equations. Glaring down at the paper for a half-hour had only caused him to grow a terrible headache. Looking up from the dinner table his onxy eyes followed his mother's form. Chi-chi rushed through the small kitchen throwing whatever she could find into her pot. From chopped potatoes to huge clumps of cabbage. Sighing Gohan had turned his gaze from his mother's cooking back to his mechanical pencil. Watching the bright pink eraser tip spin he began to doze off. Eyes unfocused Gohan let his mind run while his body remained stiff and unresponsive.
Dad was one of the first things that came to mind when Gohan had let himself drift off. He could barely remember the mans face and he didn't want to remember what it felt like to see him. Instead he shifted his gaze to his mother, hard at work in the kitchen scrubbing away at dishes. She spent most her time either working at the local supermarket or taking classes at the college. Regardless of where she was she happy to receive visitors. Whether that was late at night are just before the sunrise. Back when he was young Gohan could remember crawling out of bed with tear stained cheeks from one of his countless nightmares. He'd be shaking all over and would stand before his mother and ask where daddy was. On those dark nights and early mornings she would pull him into bed with her and they would weep together. With his arms wrapped around the large mound beginning to form on his mother's belly Gohan would weep into the soft pile of flesh. His sobs growing harder with each weak kick."Gohan, Gohan. Finish up with that math homework would ya," Chi-chi barked causing Gohan to jump. With a yes ma'am he got back to work on his calculus trying his best to ignore the savoury aroma that had begun to fill the kitchen.
After dinner Gohan had went straight to his room making sure to lock the door behind him. Tossing his backpack to one corner of the room he ignored the mess of old comic books on his dresser and dove under the covers of bed. Arms tucked behind his head he stared up at the ceiling, before turning to switch of his table lamp. As darkness filled the room Gohan rolled onto his side to stare out the window into the starless sky. Closing his eyes Gohan had tried to sleep but with the thoughts of father rushing through his head made it difficult. The feelings of sorrow and loneliness had long pasted him leaving him empty and fatigued. Tossing over he stared into the darkness of his room and instead focused on deciphering the shadows beside him.Eventually his eyes slid shut on their own accord and he drifted into a dreamless slumber.

Sunlight caused his eyes to flutter open as bright shades of orange and yellow colored his room. Rising from bed Gohan walked towards his window staring out into the neighborhood. He was greeted by the sight of lush green grasses and pristine picket fences. His bedroom window face toward the back of the house giving him a view of the dark woods beyond. A stray deer had quickly skipped into the woods with one of Chi-chi's tomato plants in its mouth. Gohan lived where most people would like to call the middle of nowhere with only a few scattered house to make up their neighborhood. Unlike most however Gohan enjoyed the idea of having nature as his next door neighbor. Staring into the vast layers of green the foliage broke at the house next door. It was a good distance away and could only be spotted by looking past the thick layer of trees. It's dark rotting wood blended in with rest of the forest giving it a good amount of camouflage. Another wave of curiosity filled him as he longed to traverse through those woods and be near that old shack. At a young age Gohan had always found an interest in the old house, from it's old age to it's solitude in the woods. However his curiosity never outweighed his fear and thus he never worked up the guts to head their himself. The farthest his bravery had ever taken him was to the back window where he peaked into the house. His eyes only meeting an inky black causing him to squint into the darkness a bit longer. However his mother's calls for dinner had left him sprinting from the house back to his own yard where Chi-chi would drag him by the ear. Once inside she would cry about the dangers of the woods and how ticks with rare infections could give him cancer.A smile rose on Gohan's face as the fond memories of his childhood returned to him. With a small grin on his face Gohan headed straight for the bathroom to get ready for work. He worked at a greasy burger joint in town for most the summer, of course he wasn't one of the cooks there. He merely cleaned up around the place from clearing tables to washing dishes. The job was far from fun and it didn't pay much but he still came back everyday most likely out of pure habit.
Pulling on his sneakers he ran out the door and into the driveway towards his bicycle. However before he could reach the vibrant red bike he was knocked onto he back. Letting at an embarrassingly high pitched scream as a large form began to cover him. Eyes tightly knit Gohan had tried to enjoy his final breath before a dark shadow blocked out the sun.
"Oh my Kami Are you alright sweetie.I didn't see you back there," Chi-chi squealed standing over him . Before Gohan could speak she was on him in seconds from checking him over for scrapes to fixing the collar of his shirt.
"Mom I'm fine-," Gohan began only for his mother to cut him off."It's not fine Gohan I could have killed you. You know what how about I make it up to you do you like ice cream or maybe pizza"
With a sigh Gohan lead his mother back to her car before she worked herself up. Climbing into the drivers seat she held onto his forearm keeping him in place.
"Really Gohan I- "
"I'm okay mom, really you just scared me is all," Gohan smile at her " Besides you almost run over Mr. Piccolo on the daily and he's okay. "
"That's different Gohan. Piccolo is a grown man,but you your my special boy Gohan. God forbid your bother Goten came out. Do you know how many times..." The entire time Chi-chi rambled on about car safety and how the insurance won't cover any brain damages. After insisting that she drop him off to work she started a long string of lectures as well as the standard worry wort nonsense. At some point Gohan had begun to wish the car had killed instead.
As they pulled up to the burger dive Gohan quickly sank down in his seat in a desperate attempt to appear invisible. Of course his mother was completely oblivious to the stares their old hatchback was receiving. With the windows rolled down Chi-chi's 2000's playlist erupted from the car as everyone near by got and ear full of Brittany Spears top hits. To say he was embarrassed was an understatement, he was mortified. Gohan's pale cheeks turned a cherry red as he tried to hide underneath his baseball cap. Chi-chi happily hummed along with the raunchy tunes before pulling over to the front of the diner. Sliding out the passenger seat Gohan tucked his head into his neck and made a beeline for the back entrance.
"Maybe if I keep my head down no one will recognize me," he thought. Of course fate wouldn't allow him to escaped with his pride unscathed.
"Bye Gohan, mommy loves you. Don't forget to bring home the big bucks," Chi-chi screamed across the parking lot. With the honk of the horn and her devious chuckle she was driving down the street happily singing along with her radio. The storm of laughter that followed suit made him nearly pass out.
-------------------------------That's the end of the first section. A bit short I know but I just want to get some basic stuff out of the way. Also I suggest you listen to the Life Is Strange soundtrack while you read this story since it's inspired off the game. Don't worry there will not be any crossovers or any mind blowing easter eggs just small stuff. Oc will pop up in the next chapter so don't worry.
