Dogs are loyal and kind creatures when you treat them right. Dogs need food and water every day and need to go on walks often or anything else for exercise like fetch.  The average dog sleeps for about 12 to 14 hours per 24-hour cycle. That's just the beginning, though. Puppies, who expend a lot of energy exploring and learning may need as much as 18 to 20 hours. Older dogs also tend to need more rest, as do certain breeds. Unless stated otherwise, these amounts are the total that is recommended for your dog over a 24 hour period.

Unless stated otherwise, these amounts are the total that is recommended for your dog over a 24 hour period. Most adult dogs should eat two meals a day (puppies often require three or more feedings), so you'll need to divide the amount in the table by the number of meals you are offering. Though exercise needs are based on a dog's age, breed, size and overall health, your dog should spend between 30 minutes to two hours on an activity every day. Breeds in the hunting, working, or herding groups (e.g., Labrador retrievers, hounds, collies and shepherds) will need the most exercise.
