"Are you going to get that?" Aiden blinks slowly and as his eyes come into focus he sees Delia standing over him, staring just past him. He turns over in his bed, feeling a sudden rush of cold air as his sheets slip to reveal his naked back.

Fumbling, he reaches for his loudly ringing phone. Through his blurred vision, he struggles to find it on his bedside table, patting the desk until finally feeling it. He swipes to answer, then places the phone to his ear. He glances at Delia, who's staring absentmindedly somewhere to the left of him. Aiden hesitates, wanting to say something, but then someone's speaking.

"Aiden?" a pause. "This is Dr. Shah, I've your results for you."

Aiden sits up suddenly fully awake. "Oh, um—shit—okay, um," he's stuttering foolishly, trying to calm himself.

"Are you alright?" Dr. Shah sounds vaguely concerned.

"Yeah I'm—" Aiden takes a breath, glancing up at Delia, who's now watching him carefully. He catches her eye and she looks away quickly. He pauses, watching her and he forgets momentarily that he's seconds away from life altering news.

Delia's teeth catch her lip and her eyes are filled with an unidentifiable emotion. Aiden's hand moves instinctively toward her, his lips part in the shape of her name. "Aiden?" His hand drops and he sighs, focusing back on Dr. Shah.

"Yeah, I'm—" he glances at Delia, "here."

"Alright, well. The results were confirming—your tumor is benign." A feeling of intense relief washes over Aiden and he's breathing shakily through a smile.

"So," he starts, "what happens now?"

"Surgery is the next step, followed by periodic MRI examinations, should the procedure be successful. The tumor is small, however, and contained within the cerebrum, so success is very likely." The sound of shuffled papers. "Ideally, we perform surgery in one week. Friday, the 10th of October."

"Wow um right ok. The tenth, alright. Yeah."

"You'll spend at least 48 hours being monitored."

"Okay," Aiden agrees. "I'll be there then."

"Good. I've patients to get back to. Goodbye, Aiden." Briskly, Dr. Shah hangs up.

Aiden runs his hands through his hair, on the brink of exasperated relief and nervous disbelief. Delia steps toward the door, the sound of her footfalls drawing Aiden out of his shocked silence. "So," Delia starts, tentatively, "what's happening on the tenth?"
