"It's so dark and rainy, I can barely see in front of me!" the man in the driver's seat squinted his eyes and leaned forward.
"Son of a bitch, Ethan! I told you we should have just stayed at the hotel." the woman in the passenger seat shook her head as she pulled out her phone.
"Of course, there's no fucking signal out here in bum fuck Egypt! And my battery is almost dead. Can anything else go wrong? "
Ethan glanced nervously at her.
"I uh..missed the turn. And there's no way to turn around."
She looked at him and sighed.
"I'm sorry, Ruby. Truly, I am."
"The bad weather isn't your fault. Maybe we can take a detour."
As soon as the words left her mouth, a dark road appeared on their left.
"Here! Turn here, Ethan."
Ethan jerked the steering wheel to the left and slowly drove down the dark road. There was an eerie fog that seemed to be everywhere.
Ruby checked her phone again.
Still no signal.
She rolled down her window and held her phone in the air, hoping to get at least one bar. No luck. She sighed in frustration and started to pull her arm back in the car.
That's when the phone slipped from her hand and she heard it clatter on the pavement.
"Fuck!" she yelled. "Ethan, stop. I dropped my phone."
Ethan hit the brakes and the car rolled to a stop. They both got out of the car and walked back towards the way they came. Ruby walked up and down the side of the road.
"I can't find it. It's too dark. But it couldn't have gone far."
Ethan used his phone flashlight to look around the edge of the trees.
"I don't see it either."
That's when she heard it. Faint at first, but it began to progress. Her phone ringtone.
Tiptoe through the window, by the window. That is where I'll be. Come tiptoe through the tulips with me.
"What the hell?" Ruby froze in her tracks.
"That's your phone." Ethan murmured.
The ringtone got louder, echoing throughout the dark trees.
"I know. But it sounds like it's coming from deep in the woods. How did it get there?"
A cold breeze fluttered her hair. The phone stopped and they heard the sound of the battery dying. Eerie laughter echoed through the trees.
