"I can't believe someone would throw away a brand new phone. It works perfectly, and it's the new Galaxy Note 9!" The girl said as she checked out the features.
"Gemma, we should turn it in. Maybe the owner didn't mean to throw it out."
"Luna, it's completely empty. No contacts, no pictures, no apps." Gemma opened the contact tab and began to type away.
"What are you doing? That's not your phone." Luna scowled.
Gemma didn't look up.
"It is now!" she said with a grin.
Luna rolled her eyes. "Whatever, Gem. It's your funeral."
Luna got up from the couch and headed for the door. Gemma finally looked up.
"Where are you going? We have plans to watch the new season of American Horror Story!" she pouted.
Luna forced a tight smile.
"I'm tired." she said. "Goodnight. Keep the doors locked."
Gemma stared at the door after it clicked shut. That was an odd thing to say. She never needed to lock the doors. Gemma lived in the middle of nowhere, at least an hour away from the nearest town.
She shook off the strange feeling and went back to customizing the phone.
"I wouldn't hold my breath if I was you.
Cause I'll forget but I'll never forgive you.
Don't you know, Don't you know?
True friends stab you in the front."
Gemma squinted at the screen. An unknown number was flashing on the screen. She answered it and raised the phone to her ear.
"Hello?" she breathed.
At first, all she could hear was static.
"Hello?" she said, louder.
"Hi, you found my phone?" A scratchy voice answered. "I need it back, please."
Whoever was on the other end sounded frantic and desperate.
Gemma hesitated before answering and took a deep breath.
"I'm sorry, I think you have the wrong number."
"Please, I need my phone. I'm lost and I've been hurt. Gemma, plea-"
Gemma's eyes widened and she hung up quickly. How did they know her name? Maybe it was a prank. She grinned and shook her head.
"Nice try, Luna. But not good enough!"
Gemma flopped back down on her bed and began taking selfies. A minute later she was standing in front of her full length mirror, posing and making pouty faces. The low battery alert popped up on the screen. Gemma plugged it into her laptop and got ready for bed. She fell asleep instantly.
*******
The next morning, Gemma woke up to the phone blasting music. She rolled out of bed and cautiously walked to her desk. The phone screen was opened to her music app. Gemma furrowed her brow. That was strange... All of the music from her laptop had been transferred to the phone. It had to have auto-synced, there was no other explanation.
Her stomach growled. Time for breakfast. She grabbed her phone and school bag and made her way to the kitchen. Her parents and little brother weren't there. 'Everyone must have left already.' Gemma thought. She poured a bowl of cereal and sat at the kitchen table. She decided to go through her selfies and see which ones were Instagram-worthy. She took another bite of cereal as she swiped through the photos. All of a sudden, she froze just as she was about to take the last bite of her breakfast. Gemma dropped the spoon and it clattered to the floor. Her eyes widened as she stared at the screen. There, in the corner of her room was a dark figure staring at her as she posed for a picture. She couldn't believe her eyes.
