A Goodnight's Kiss

For the third night this week, I can't sleep. Even though there is a floor between us, I can still hear the yelling. I know they try to be quiet at first, but the they seem to get louder and louder as the insults get worse. Putting my head under my pillow kinda helps, but I still hear them. Annie has already gone downstairs so ask for a good night's kiss, but has yet to get back in to her room. There's school tomorrow for the both of us. Summers over and Annie needs to think about kindergarten, not this. I'm used to this by now, turning my radio on to help me fall asleep.

        Eventually they will stop. Eventually.

Annie is back. She's crying. Mom's crying too. Mom gave her a kiss then peeked in my room. I can hear Dad now coming up from the basement. Both Mom and Dad start heading back to bed. After some final words between the two, the door finally closes. Annie is still whimpering, but she will eventually fall asleep.

School tomorrow. Fourth grade, here I come
