Never in my life have I met a human like Harper. She's far more real up close, down to the light freckles on her nose and the iridescent blue of her eyes. She's guarded, but honest. Obviously a risk taker. I had almost expected to have to hush her from telling her mother about my presence, but her silence on the matter defied my previous assumptions of character.

Maybe I should have left when I felt the humans coming. But to cut my time with her short is something I refuse to do. The girl is captivating. Being in her presence, surprisingly doesn't slow my mind, but quickens it. I know what to say. I know how to treat her. And I don't know how, but her forgiving curiosity makes it easy. I want to bask in her presence for hours.

When she hears the human voices, her eyes widen momentarily in surprise. I don't know how she'll react, so I watch her in interest. Her mother calls her name, and instantly, she's normal again. I watch her take a deep breath.

"Coming," she replies to her mother, as she pokes her head out the window and looks around.

Wordlessly, she motions me to get out the window.

"There's a ledge," she whispers, pointing up. "Stay there."

Her collected nature in crisis amazes me. It's like she's hidden before. She smiles fleetingly at me, an action I have not yet seen which renders me temporarily motionless, and then skips off downstairs, as if the inspection means nothing, as if the humans can't kill her instantly, should they find one tiny reason to.
