Having to wake up for yet another Monday in the middle of the school year was every high schooler’s struggle. The only thing that motivated you in the slightest bit was the fact you were now a senior, and you only had a few more months of the struggles to go through.
And that was exactly what Carter was telling himself as he tried and forced himself out of his bed.
His alarm clock had already screeched him awake, and now that the annoying alarm had shut up, he could already feel himself drifting off to sleep. But he knew that wasn’t an option for him, so with a heavy sigh, he launched himself out of the bed.
He didn’t bother to wait around, stretching as he slumped his way off to the bathroom.
Judging by the darkness of the house, his mother wasn’t awake yet. If she was, she was probably in the kitchen making breakfast. Carter wouldn’t blame her though if she was still asleep, because he would definitely be remaining asleep if he had a choice.
As much as he wanted to take his time in the shower, he didn’t, and was out almost as soon as he went in. It didn’t take him long to find clothes either, and he was already appearing in the kitchen to find his mother in no time.
“Morning Mom.” He greeted, kissing her on the cheek while she pushed a cup of coffee into his hand.
“Hello, sweetheart.” She said with a smile. “Sleep well?”
“I’d be sleeping better if I could sleep longer.” He pointed out, stepping out of her way as she shuffled across the kitchen.
“Well don’t be staying up so late.” She scolded.
He smiled sheepishly, but didn’t have to worry about a reply as she handed a plate of eggs over to him. He took it and made his way over to the table, before raising a curious eyebrow at her.
“Do you work tonight?” He asked while digging into the plate.
“Yes, I do. I won’t be back till late tonight, so there’s a pizza in the freezer for you. I don’t care if Michaela comes over, but she’s not staying past ten.” His mother warned firmly.
“Yes, Mother.” He answered around a mouthful of eggs.
She scolded at him again, but let it fall away as she briefly brought a kiss to the top of his head. “Be safe, and call me at work if you need anything.”
This time he only nodded, and the woman kissed him one last time before she went to carry on with her morning. This left Carter alone, but it wasn’t long until he had finished his eggs and was leaving for school.
Well, by leaving for school, that meant walking outside and climbing into his best friends car.
“Good morning, Carter.” Isaac greeted while his best friend slipped into the passenger’s side.
“Good morning, Isaac.” The other boy greeted back. “And who all are we picking up today?”
“Hell if I know.” Isaac grumbled as he pulled away from the curb. “I don’t know if Mark needs a ride or not, and I don’t really want to deal with Jason’s loud mouth.”
Carter laughed. “Jason’s not that bad.”
“He’s just annoying. All he cares about is drugs and I can’t wait for the day coach kicks him off the team.”
“Okay, so he is slightly annoying when it comes to drug talk.” Carter agreed while they made their way to Mark’s house. “But he’s trustworthy.”
“I trust the guy about as much as I can throw him.” Isaac continued to gripe.
“Okay, okay.” Carter said, trying to drop the subject. He wasn’t sure if he was trying to change the subject because he wasn’t comfortable having it, or if he didn’t want Mark to know what they were talking about.
