To say she was confused was an understatement as she stood in front of the small cabin in the woods behind her house. Had she left the lights on inside from yesterday when she last came here? No, of course she couldn't forget to do something as that, could she? And if she remembered clearly, she visited the cabin in the daytime; there was no need for turning on the lights. She tilted her head in confusion thinking about who or what could be in there. Who knows it could be a homeless person or even an animal. She shook her head and immediately ruled out the option of an animal breaking into it because one, the door and windows looked untouched and two, how the hell was an animal supposed to turn on the lights?
Against her better judgment, she decided to go inside anyway but not before bending down and finding the biggest stick poking out of the snow she could for defense. She wearily turned the door handle while her other hand fumbled with holding onto the stick with her mittens. Once the door creaked open she wrapped her other hand around the makeshift bat and kicked the door open with her right foot.
Nothing looked out of place and as far as she could see there was nobody inside or no animals crawling around. She huffed out a breath and flopped backwards onto the bean bag she had placed in the corner of the room. She was glad there wasn't a homeless person living in her property, but if there was she would be more than understanding. She knew just how cold Pennsylvania could get, and although she was from the wealthiest family in her town and she had been pampered with nothing but constant heat during the harsh winters, she wouldn't want someone out in the cold. As she stared up at the ceiling and tried calming her racing heartbeat she realized a slight flaw in her thoughts.
Merion, Pennsylvania was one of the richest towns in the state. There were mansions and fancy cars but there were no homeless people. As she thought about it for a second longer, her eyes widened and she sprung up. Of course if it wasn't a homless person- and certainly not an animal- it had to be a robber!
She ran over to the desk across the room and pulled open all the drawers, rummaging about to see if anything was missing. All the pictures and other miscellaneous items she kept in there were exactly where she left them. She placed a still mitten covered hand against her chest and closed her eyes, once again attempting to slow her quickened breathing and heart rate.
But her eyes shot open again as the door knob turned and she heard someone singing faintly and before she could even think of what she was doing she grabbed the stick she discarded at the door and swung.
