after knocking i stood there for a minute drowning in my own thoughts.

why did i show up? as if she's gunna answer you. you've been drooling at her for the past year and once she's free she's gunna fall right into your arms? right, you dumbass.

my thoughts eventually got the best of me. "who am i kidding" i sighed.

i placed the bag down and started to walk down the hall until i heard the door open.

without hesitation i turn back around and there she is. we looked at each other for what felt like an eternity.

"what're you doing here?" she asked, tucking her hair behind her left ear and breaking the silence. she looked surprised. i don't blame her

"listen," i start. "uh well, i-uhm. so,"

shit. i can't do this. i think to myself. i shake my head and take another deep breath and continue

"courtney, i- i know you're going through a lot tonight with the breakup and i'm not here to have one of those awkward silent face to face things again, i just want you to know that i-" she cut me off.

"that you brought my bag." she said, not asked, pointing to her bag. her facial expression seemed upset, maybe tired.

i sighed. she knew i wasn't talking about the bag but she clearly didn't want to talk so i just went along with it.

"uh yeah, you're bag." i started looking down at it "you left it and sunny told me they were cleaning the floors and.. yeah." i said disappointed while fiddling with my hands

"well, thanks. that was really nice of you." she said i nodded.

i started to make my way down the hallway, "you're such an idiot" i whisper to myself before i hear a small sigh.

"shayne. wait." my heart stopped and i turned around again. she stepped outside so that we were both in the hallway and i was standing close enough to tell that tears were forming in her eyes.

i took a few steps closer to her and she immediately broke down. she wrapped her arms around me and sobbed into my shoulder. it took me a few seconds to realize what was going on before i returned the hug.

"i- i'm so s-sorry" she said in between breaths. "i-i keep leading you o-on and that's not fair to you"

i hugged her tighter and laid my head on her shoulder in attempt to comfort her. "it's okay" i whispered. "i know you. you'd never do it on purpose."

we stayed in the hug for a while. it truly hurt me seeing her like this. she's never like this.

i could feel her heart beating against my chest, or maybe it was mine. whosever it was, it didn't matter.

i still couldn't help myself.

hesitantly, i let go of the hug and softly placed my hands on her face. she showed a shocked yet comfortable expression as her hands went from my back onto my shoulders.

"i don't want to lead you on anymore" she quietly said breaking our eye contact and looking down at her feet

i answered with the only words that i could manage to say:

"then don't."

slowly, i pulled her face closer to mine until our lips met.

everything felt right about this. no distractions, nothing but us. did i finally have the girl of my dreams?
