Trapped - 1
Jason was drunk. I could tell by the way he stumbled in, hurling abuse at me for no apparent reason. I slipped into the bedroom, hoping, praying, that he would fall asleep on the couch in the living room. No such luck. Jason staggered up the stairs, swaying slightly as he made his way to the door. I held my back against the door and closed my eyes.
"Not tonight. Please God, not tonight," I silently prayed.
I lurched forward as Jason pushed the door open and burst in. He cursed my name and began to scream words I could not comprehend. I pressed myself against the wall and tried to hide from his eyes. He slapped me hard across the face and my cheek stung.
There was no point in fighting back. It would only anger him more and I'd suffer worse than I already had. There was nothing to do but wait for his rage to blow over. He raised his fist and I closed my eyes, afraid of what was going to come. I tried not to but tears still rolled down my face.
This infuriated him and he shouted ugly words.
"SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP MELANIE!"
He raised his voice, yelling that it was my fault he suffered at work.
He slapped me more and hit me till I could feel the red-hot blood trickling down my bruised cheek. He continued to bellow and I saw an opportunity. His arm was lifted and I ducked under it, managing to get free. I ran for the door but he had locked it. He grabbed my hair and dragged me down to the floor. I tried to scream but no words came out. He harshly pulled me up and threw me against the hard wall.
"Jase, I'm sorry," I whispered, hoping that he'd stop but it was too late. His face was twisted in unimaginable hate. He threw me a look of contempt and headed for the door. I heard the front door slam and my tears fell freely, burning the scratches and bruises on my face. I fell to the floor, my bones nearly broken. The hurt and the pain was excruciating.
"Oh please God, have mercy. Oh please let it end."
I gasped for breath, unable to take any more pain. I lay there motionless, sprawled on the floor and everything became a blur.

I awoke, dazed and disoriented. I grabbed the side of the bed and pulled myself onto it. I sat with my head in my arms trying to think clearly. I took a painkiller and crossed over to the mirror. I looked dreadful. Blood had stained my face and the one side of my face where Jason had repeatedly hit me, had swollen to the size of a tennis ball.
I treated it the best I could and sat back down thinking about how it had all gone terribly wrong. I was only twenty and had already suffered enough. Jason hadn't always been like this. He had once been loving, tender and kind. I don't know where it all went wrong. Every time he hit me, he used to say he was sorry, telling me how he had never meant to lay a finger on me. I had believed him.
I had really thought he loved me but now it was his daily routine. He stayed out all day, got drunk at night then came home and abused me. He had gone too far. His drinking was way out of control, as was his anger. He had the audacity to live under my roof, take everything I gave him for granted, and wreck everything that was mine. But I couldn't stand up to him. I was too afraid.
