By seven that evening, I was growing steadily uneasy and wary of what would unfold in the following hours.
We stepped outside and the sky was rimmed with a purple and orange glow in the wintry twilight. I sighed and my breath formed clouds that drifted and faded peacefully. The crescent moon hung low in the sky and I looked at Jason; his skin had just a faint luminosity, subtle and mysterious. He smiled a heart-stopping smile which made me feel like I was back at college, falling for him for the first time. He stole his hand in mine and we walked silently across the waterfront.
We neared the docks and we saw the crowds of people eagerly waiting on the other side for the fireworks.
"We'll watch them from here," Jason murmured, so low, I barely heard him.
I looked at him questioningly but he merely shook his head. We sat on a nearby wall and we had a perfect view. For a while, we just listened to the rushing of the cool waves, each in our own world.
BOOM! The first firework burst into an array of shimmering silver stars, gently drifting down to Earth. Woven gold clusters danced a staccato before sprinkling a shower of sparks. A set of scarlet, fuchsia and emerald stars each split into four or five stars and they left a trail as they mapped the skies. An invariably silver loop, preceded by a beautiful blue tracer star, wriggled and swam away from the centre in a silent, mesmeric dance. I smiled to myself, hypnotized by the breathtaking display.
"I've missed that smile..." I tore my gaze from the smoky sky and saw Jason looking at me with a strange expression, somewhere between sorrow and regret. The fireworks were now distant and the noises surrounding us were fading. I must have heard wrong.
"What?"
"I've missed that smile, that look you used to give me every time I wound you up, that sparkle in your eyes every time I told you I loved you." His voice was just above a whisper and barely audible. "I've missed you but I know that I lost you a long time ago."
I took a deep breath. Whatever I was expecting, it hadn't been this. "Jason...these past few weeks...where have you been? And why did you come back?"
He smiled again. "I've been wondering when you'd ask me that question." He took my hand again, our fingers intertwined. "I've been...places." He sighed. "You're probably wondering what all this is," he waved a hand in the direction of the fireworks and crowds of people. "I - after I -" his voice dropped to a whisper. "After I-I beat you with the belt, I went to Andy's house."
I had no idea who Andy was but I didn't probe. I was curious and I was desperate for answers.
"I was drunk as hell. He sobered me up, fast. God, I've never drunk so much water," he laughed nervously, running his free hand through his hair. "He started to talk to me, taking me back to when we were both teenagers. You remember our first date? You loved star gazing, so we lay in my back garden, entwined in each other's arms. We told each other our dreams and hopes. We found the most sparkling sky diamond and called it our own. Our perfect shining star."
Of course I remembered. The most perfect night of my life. I re-lived that night every day.
"And it hit, Mel." He turned to look at me, his eyes sombre. "It made me realise how much I needed you and how much you meant to me. I knew I had to sort myself out. So he took me to Swanswell who help with drug and alcohol addictions. I had a counsellor, Becca. I stayed with Andy while I worked with her on anger management and alcohol usage. I had to straighten myself out before I came back to you and I know I'm not perfect yet-far from-but I thought -"
