Mateo left my blood boiling. All those years of betrayal and hate that I had been shoving down had rose to the surface the moment i saw his ugly face. The fact that I caught him flirting with Cassia made it even worse. She was mine... at least to his knowledge she was. So i marked my territory by giving her a sloppy semi drunken kiss. Not my best work, I'll admit. But it did the trick.

When Mateo left Cassia was still in a daze with a look of confusion on her face.

"Cass, I'm sorry i yelled at you." I rubbed the back of my neck. "Unlike you, I'm not the biggest fan of my family."

She shook her head and brought her gaze up to meet mine.

"It's okay. I get it." She brushed my apology off.
Her finger pointed in the direction of the house.
"So that guy," she started. "was your brother, right?"

"Unfortunately."

"Why don't you like him?"

"Because he's the worst."

"What'd he do?"

"He lied to me."

"About?"

"Stuff."

"Who's Jade?"

Her name still brought pain to my chest.

"Jeez, woman." I gave a fake laugh. "You sure are full of a lot of questions, huh?"

She batted her long lashes and looked away.

"I'm just trying to understand you." She replied softly.

That makes two of us.

I sighed.

Fuck it.

"A few years ago Mateo stole Jade, my girlfriend at the time, away from me." I told Cassia. "Haven't liked him since then."

Her eyebrows crinkled.

"That doesn't seem like something that you'd hold a however many year grudge against."

"That's because i gave you the short story version."

"What's the long story version?"

"Messy."

"Messy?"

"Mhm. And I'd rather not talk about it." I wrapped my arm around her shoulders. "We've made our appearance. I think it's time for us to go."

She turned herself around so that her front pressed against my front.

"We've only been here for like half an hour." She complained.

"And that's a half an hour too long for me."

"But... can you at least give me a tour of the house first?"

She looked up at me sideways with her lips pouting and her eyes wide.

I rolled my eyes and scoffed.

"You're lucky you're cute." I said under my breath.

"Is that a yes?" She smiled biting her bottom lip.

"I guess."

She squealed pulling me into a tight hug.

"Have I ever told you that you're the best fake boyfriend I've ever had?" Her words came out muffled against my chest.

"Yeah, yeah." I peeled her off of me. "Let's get this over with.

I took Cassia's hand and guided her through a side entrance into the kitchen away from the party.
