In the ruins, he sees an image of her. The memories come flooding back and shoot him straight through the heart. The arrows dig into his arteries until he’s overflowed with longing and loneliness. He just can’t pull himself together. He can’t forget about those times. The times before he made it a fight between him and natural law.

Those nights where there were stars, and crowds of people out to watch them. Flashing fireworks and loud carnival music. Kids dancing throughout the streets without a care in the world. The trash would blow off the ground as the wind swept in, and the Pidove would peck at the leftovers scattered across the sidewalk. But now, there was nothing.
