Shadow cast against the wall by dim candlelight, a figure slipped along the hallway. His feet padded quietly against the stone, making as little noise as possible until he stopped by a door. The guard posted outside gave him a nod, so he tapped on the door and stepped inside.

"Are you awake?" he called softly.

A sleepy voice responded. "Yeah."

The visitor smiled and sat on the bed, running his fingers through the hair of the boy who lay among the blankets. "I'm sorry, I just got off duty. I came to see you as soon as I could."

"Tell me about it," the other mumbled. His eyes were fluttering as he tried to keep them open.

"You should sleep."

"You came to see me, didn't you?"

The newcomer laughed. "Okay. Well, we have a new lead on ASHES. We'll get them soon, I'm sure of it."

The younger boy opened his dark eyes, staring up at his visitor with an expression he would never get used to. His gaze was empty, dead as his heart, and yet so beautiful. "I want to help you."

"I know," the night visitor said. "And you will. One day, you will fight by my side, and all will fall before you."

"They're all afraid of me," the younger boy said abruptly.

Hand clenched around hand, as the older's heart twisted. "Not me." He stared fiercely at his sleepy companion, trying to make him understand what he meant to him. "Never me. I will always be by your side. Anything you want, anything you need, I'll give it to you."

"Anything?"

"I will do anything for you. Anything at all."
