He had thought he would be safe, that he could be free.

Now that he stopped to consider it though, it seemed too much like a dream, that of a foolish young boy that had hope and lacked understanding of the real world.

He had believed the people from S.H.I.E.L.D. had managed to erase the dangerous part of his mind, that they had got rid of the deadly assassin that numbed his thoughts when triggered, but it had only been another lie they had thrown his way so he would work for them, so he would cooperate.

Did Steve now? Had he deceived him so he would do as told?

Bucky doubted his friend would actually do that after all he had gone through to bring him back, but he couldn't be sure of anything, and less in a situation like that one.

You both were on a mission. A recovery mission, Fury had said. It would be easy, he had said.

Now, you two were trapped in an old building. The metal door had closed behind you right after you stepped in, leaving no apparent way to escape.

At first, you had quietly wondered if the hinges had given up due to age and the extreme temperatures they had been exposed to in that part of Siberia, but the more Bucky looked around, the more familiar everything got: the distribution of the furniture, the lack of decoration...

He raised his gun as he moved further inside, inspecting the place.

A minute later, the wall next to you lit up, making you take a few steps back, and the dark-haired man instinctively shielded your body from possible attacks, readying his gun to shoot if necessary.

The wall turned out to be a two-way mirror and, now that the lights were on on the other side, you could clearly see the figure standing behind it: A middle-aged man with gray hair and a well trimmed beard stared at you two expressionless. Freeing a hand from one of his pockets, he stepped forward and pressed a button.

Bucky walked backwards, making you mirror his actions as he pushed your stomach lightly with the palm of his metal hand.

"Soldat."

The word came after an unpleasant whistling from the old speakers and, as soon as it reached his ears, panic filled Bucky's body. He darted his eyes in your direction, but you looked at him confused, your eyebrows knitting together even closer at seeing his contorted expression.

He pressed the button on his earpiece. "Steve, get us out of here. NOW."

The answer came back as a disturbing white noise, and you both focused again on the elder man when his laugh filled the air.

"I'm afraid this building is a dead zone, Soldat."

"Don't call me that," Bucky growled, but the man behind the two-way mirror ignored him. He took out a red notebook with a black star on the cover from a bag and put it against the glass.

"It is your duty, Soldat. Follow the orders." You had no problem to understand his accent and what he had just said, and you stared at him wide-eyed in realization.

That man planned to trigger Bucky, to bring the assassin HYDRA had implanted in him back, and he had trapped the two of you together, which could only mean that he'd have him kill you right then and there.
