Enjoy!

Hydrophobia

Prologue

My head was resting on my palm as I bit the end of my pencil nervously. There was still a minute left before school ended but math lessons always seemed to last longer, making this minute drag on forever.

I decided that the best way to let time fly is to immerse myself in my sea of thoughts. In other words, I'm doodling in my notebook. The graphite scratched on the paper with every stroke I made. I didn't bother to look at what I was doodling.

"Class!" Mrs Wretched's voice, which sounded like nails on a chalkboard, shook me out of my thoughts. "I know you lazy kids won't do anything productive this summer so I'm giving you assignments!"

Whoever that was still awake in class groaned at the thought of doing homework on the beach. The boys banged their heads on the table while the girls tweeted their rants on Twitter. I couldn't be bothered to do either and simply shut my notebook before dumping it into my bag.

"But Mrs Wretched!" Oliver yelled, standing up on his chair, "I object to this act of inhumane child cruelty! How could you, a teacher, support such acts of child abuse?"

   Oh god Oliver.

   Not you!

"This isn't an act of child abuse!" Mrs Wretched shouted. "I'm simply giving you your assignments, which you as responsible students should be doing!"

Oliver narrowed his eyes at Mrs Wretched, trying his best to think of a good comeback. Well Oliver, we've been best friends for a really long time and the least I could do is support you in your stupid endeavors of embarrassing Mrs Wretched... Though I highly suspect we will lose this case.

"But Mrs Wretched!" I stood up from my seat, staring intently at her as she moved her gaze from Oliver to me. "According to a reliable source of research, too much homework has been proven to cause a student's grade to decrease! How can homework help us if all it does is lower our grades and cut down our supply of oxygen?"

"Preventing a child from getting the oxygen he needs is a form of child abuse according to a book written by Einstein!" Oliver added and I snickered at him. Fat chance Einstein will write such a book!

"I agree to whatever legit points they have!" Alyssa, one of our classmates, stood up. She adjusted her pink tank top as she said that, giving the boys a seductive wink before she sat back down.

Legit points? At least someone believes the lie we just made up.

Mrs Wretched didn't seem to buy it though and ended up throwing chalks at us while we ran around the classroom avoiding it.

"Oliver! Keira!" Mrs Wretched panted as she tried to catch her breath the way she tried to catch us. "Help me give out the ass-"

"Class is over, Mrs Wretched," Oliver announced.

Mrs Wretched looked at the hands on her wristwatch before glaring at us. "The bell hasn't even rung yet so if you want to escape detention, give out the ass-"

"No can do because the bell has rung!" I wiggled my index finger as the school bell rung, signaling the end of the school day and the start of the Summer holidays! "Bye Mrs Wretched! You can kiss your assignments now!"
