Chapter One, December 31st

It's 8:30pm on a Friday night. Not just any Friday night. It's December 31st. New Year's Eve, and I'm sitting in my pyjamas on the couch devouring a tub of Ben & Jerry's cookie dough ice cream alone. I had plans to go back to Sydney to watch the bridge fireworks, with my boyfriend... sorry ex-boyfriend, but he decided to leave a month before our romantic new year's date. So here I am, being a couch potato watching Netflix, counting down the hours and minute until the fireworks are on TV.

"Seriously, Reign? It's been a month you need to get back out there." Meet my best friend. Nina Jacobson. We've known each other since birth. Our mums are best friends, so we've practically grown up together as sisters. "It's New Year's Eve and you're watching Gilmore Girls. It's sad." She said pulling off the fluffy blue blanket, I was happily cocooned in.

"No, it's not. It's perfectly normal. Heaps of people do it. And what's wrong with Gilmore Girls?" I said snatching it back out of her hands.

"Yeah for people who don't have lives." Next, she took the ice cream out of my hands. "Come on. You're 19! Young and single. You should be getting out there and finding a New Year's kiss."

"But I don't want to," I said crawling back into my cocoon. "If I can't go to Sydney with Alex, then I don't want to go anywhere."

"Stop being so dramatic. Alex has been gone for over a month now." She reached back over, seizing my cocoon, throwing it over the couch so I couldn't reach it again and pulled me up from the couch. "You are going to get out of these embarrassing PJ's and change into something slutty and you are going to come with me to find the coolest club in surfer's paradise there is."

"Oh yep, you see, I don't have any slutty clothes. Looks like I can't go. Too bad." I said slumming back down onto the couch.

"Oh no, you don't. You're not getting out of this one. I have plenty of cute clothes. You can just borrow mine."

"Do I have to," I whine.

"YES! Now come on. I already know what you should wear."

After rejecting the majority of Nina's clothes, we Finally settled on a cute little black tube dress, pairing it with a back choker and a pair of small back heels. After deciding what I was going to wear, Nina sat me down in front of the mirror and began to straighten my hair and cake my face with makeup.

"Damn. I am good. I should do this for a living." She looked at me up and down, taking in the amazing makeover she had just performed. "See you look beautiful. Guys would be lining up to be your New Year's kiss."

"You know, you're right. I think tonight will be good for me. I need to get over Alex. It was his decision to leave me and now it's my turn to move on."

"Yes, you're totally right. I didn't like him anyway." She said embracing me. "That's a total lie. He was great, but that doesn't matter now. All that matters is, tonight, you are going to forget about him and start the new year off with a bang."

"To 2019!" I Cheered holding my wine glass in the air.

"TO 2019!" She Cheered, followed by her sculling down her drink. "Oh come on. The Uber's here. We gotta go."

Finally arriving in Surfer's Paradise, Nina and I, after about half an hour, found a pretty promising Club.

"Sorry ladies, it's a private party," The bouncer said stopping us at the door.

"Oh come on." Wailed Nina, "It's an hour and a half till Mid Night and we don't want to spend the last few minutes of 2018 looking for a new club. This is the only good one we can find. All the other ones suck. Please"

"I'm sorry ladies, but I just can't."

"Come on man." I Butted in, "Can't you just let us two in. Look there are already quite a few people in there, I'm sure no-one will notice that we are here."

"Sorry." He replied.

"What seems to be the holdup?" A young, tan British man said, as he approached the bouncer.

"These two ladies aren't on the list."

"No worries ladies. You two can join me." He said smiling at Nina. "Come on, Brax. Let them in." The bounce lifted the velvet rope and welcomed us inside.

"He's cute," Nina whispered as we followed him inside. "Maybe he can be your New Year's kiss."

"I think he has his eye on you," I whispered back.

"You know what? I thought that too. Don't worry, we'll find you someone else." And with that, the party had started.
