Lila, Jessica and I began walking down the spiral staircase, hand in hand. I could feel my fingers trembling as police sirens rang clear in the distance.
When we finally reached the bottom of the stairs, the silence was deafening. All eyes turned to me but mine were focused on the scene in front of me. It was like something out of a movie. Men in FBI uniforms swarmed the mansion, flashing their lights in the faces of terrified guests. There was a sense of panic throughout the room as women clutched their jewellery and men struggled to remain composed.
"Everybody calm down, we are here on official government business. Point us in the direction of James and Evelyn Lockwood."
I could feel my throat tighten as the man called my parents' names. I wanted to shout in protest but no words would come out.
Everything was starting to get very hazy and it began to feel like I was out of my body, watching the situation unfold in front me.
I saw the team of officers handcuff my parents. The words "under arrest for tax evasion and fraudulent activity" rang so loud, I was sure the entire world could hear it.
I could feel my parents eyes on me. Why weren't they saying anything? This was all some huge mistake. It had to be a mistake. Why weren't they fighting for their innocence?!
"I'm so sorry Rosie" was all they managed to whisper before the officers escourted them into police vehicles.
The complete state of shock I was in prevented me from being able to speak.
Residents and party guests flooded the streets to watch my disgraced parents surrender to the authorities.
A deep sense of shame began to set in as my first thought was what Ethan Davenport would think of me.
I scanned the crowd, realising that every single person I had grown up with was looking at me with disgust. I felt about 2 feet tall in that moment and it was only about to get worse. My head began to spin from the flashing lights and large number of people surrounding me, judging me with their turned up noses. I reached to Jessica and Lila to help me balance but when I looked beside me, I was completely alone.
Standing in the dark of night, with no family and no friends, my home town felt like a foreign land. I watched the police vehicles drive off as the crowd grew louder and more intense. My eyes began following the blue flashing lights until everything turned pitch black and I hit the cold, wet emptiness of the front lawn.
