I moved my book around in my lap to fit inside of my Indian-crossed legs. Fixing my glasses, I looked from my textbook to my study guide. "What'd you get for 17?"
"Political conflict can occur over specific policies even among those who share common beliefs. One reason for that is," She read the question aloud whilst I waited her answer, at the same time I was glancing over the next question. "I put A."
"Aight that's what I put." I erased the circle I put around the letter and replaced it with highlighter; something I did when I was sure the answer was correct. "So it's right."
"Or we're both wrong...either or." Any type of history is not my strong suit. Ask me about science, I know that. But ask me who the 36th president was and I'll just stare at you dumbfounded. The only reason I made it into this AP Government & Politics class is because I cheated on my final test in AP US History last year, and then lucked up and passed the AP exam by a few points. Shit, the only reason I'm scraping by with a mid-range C is because Kammi is in my class and she attempts to help me understand. See; she's pretty well-rounded when it comes to school. You could put her in the hardest of classes, and she'll probably pass them all with a B; it helps that she's a fast learner too. But me, nope; if I don't know it, it's hard for me to pick it up.
Hence, the reason we're here now, studying our asses off. The AP exams actually come up before our final exams for the class; so we really had to put in work to get the college credit. After we knock this work out we'll be going into AP Physics. Talk about a long day-and it's only 5 in the afternoon.
"Can we take a break, my brain hurts!" I spoke, dropping my pencil to massage my temples.
"Go to 20 then we can." I huffed an exasperated sigh, but picked my pencil back up and went to answer the next three questions. "You can knock Physics and Chemistry out like its nothing but you can't handle GOPO." She shook her head.
"That's different, though. I actually like science and math. You actually have to learn something. This class is just remembering shit. I can't stand it."
"Whatever. Kaycee, can you make us something to eat!" She turned her head back to me once Kace hollered back 'Sure' from the kitchen. She stays in the kitchen, I swear; every time I'm here-which is quite often-that's where she is. Either that or tending to my niece, or cleaning some room that's already clean. I could never be a housewife. Shit just looks too boring; sitting in a house either alone or with just your kids. I have to be up and doing something. I'm far from a homebody; that's just not me.
I practically threw my book off my lap and onto the coffee table once I was done circling answers on the assigned sheet of paper. "Your hair looks a mess, sis. When is the last time you did something to it?"
"I don't even care about my hair right now, to be honest." My jaw literally fell to the ground at her words. Not Kammi. This girl adores her hair-she'll spend a lifetime just brushing it in the mirror if you let her. And now she doesn't care about it? What?
"You haven't talked to Trey yet, have you?" I shook my head at her when she shook her head no. It's been a full week since what happened the night of Valentine's Day and they've managed to avoid each other. Even at school, and they have two classes together! Kammi actually went as far as forcing me to call her if Trey was at our lunch table, just so that she wouldn't run into him. Kammi doesn't go out of her comfort zone for anybody, so the fact that this 'break-up' had her ducking and dodging him puzzled me.
"It's not that I don't want to, he doesn't even want to see me. I'm not gonna force him to talk to me Abri."
"That's not even close to being true, Kam. He wants to see you, he wants to talk to you. He's actually asked about you..." I threw that last bit in there on accident, it was something he didn't want to reach her ears for whatever reason. But saying Trey 'asked about' Kammi has to rank as the understatement of the year. The nigga went from grilling me about her whereabouts, to looking around for her on his own, to begging me to tell her to call him so that they can 'talk this shit out because it's stupid and he was tired of it'.
