Chapter 4 - The Field

“I don’t know if I agree with you”

Rowan laid there looking up at the stars. A comet flashed in the great black and was gone in an instant.

“It’s all a little … much don’t you think? It’s like you just pulled that out of your head as a last minute sort of justification to sound sort of intelligent and dreamy. Sure it was very poetic and perhaps you do truly believe in that, but that’s not the way it works for me.”

He looked over at her, his eyes wide open.

“I don’t think the universe cares if we all think as one mind or not. If you wanna look at the big picture of things, it’s easier to realize that we’re all made of atoms randomly assembled from random forces eons ago. Nothing as insignificant as consciousness should even matter to the universe. Our fates aren’t decided by the stars or any cosmic force, it’s determined by us and the things we decide to do in this miniscule part of existence.”

She looked away from him, the cool summer breeze blowing across her face. They sat there for a long time before either began to talk again. Abby thought he had fallen asleep and never had heard her say the things she had said. But finally, he turned his head.

“Abby, what are the things that scare you?”
