Based off 1x22. Goes slightly AU, but this is my spin on how things should’ve ended in the 1st season.

Zoe couldn’t believe Wade was still so mad at her. She hadn’t even done anything to make him mad, but she understood what Lavon was saying. Wade had finally developed real feelings for someone, and she wasn’t sure she actually returned them.

When she picked him up off the side of the road, she honestly thought she could get him un-mad at her, but he was proving stubborn and difficult. When he told her he was going to be moving off the plantation, she was stunned and a little hurt. If he had real feelings, then why wasn’t he fighting for her? Why was he letting her get away with still having “feelings” for George. She let out a sigh as she contemplated these thoughts. Wade annoyed her to no end, but there might, could be something there. She had to admit she’d considered it during the heat wave, so it was possible, especially with George getting married today. Technically he was going off the market so she should be moving on.

It wasn’t but a second later, Wade was warning her of the storm turning worse, but she didn’t really believe that. Until the tree fell in their way, and Wade was abandoning her for the barn. There was no way, she was going to stay in the car by herself, so she took off after him, getting soaked in the process. She thought for sure her efforts to make it up to him, would work, especially when he said he could see through her now transparent shirt, but he wasn’t budging.

She was equally as frustrated as he was now, and it only got worse when the baby goat escaped. She thought that was as bad as things could get, until she admitted she knew what his problem was and he left her. She had no choice but to call Lavon and tell him she was stranded and to leave her until the wedding was over. She was thinking over her situation and how things had gotten so bad with Wade, when he came storming back in soaking wet. She couldn’t help but appreciate how his tank hugged his body before he started spouting off nonsense about her.

He thought he liked her, but then he realized it was just lust he was feeling and it was her fault they were in this mess all because she wouldn’t sleep with him. Zoe thought he was full of shit, but she wasn’t exactly going to call him on it and make things worse. She believed Lavon when he told her that Wade had real feelings for her, and she knew Wade was just going into self protect mode because he thought she didn’t return them.

Before she can even respond to his rant, they hear the baby goat crying and go to rescue him. She felt the cut from the barbed wire, but ignored it because this goat needed their help. When Wade stripped off the tank to hold the fence up for her, she couldn’t help but admire his abs. She had to give it to him, he was one fine looking man. Once safely back inside the barn with the returned goat, Wade noticed she was bleeding.

“Doc, you’re bleeding,” he said quietly. She felt the warmth spread through her at his familiar nickname for her, and she pulled the shirt back to try and see it. When she couldn’t, she just felt around it before instructing him to get her a bandage out of her bag. When he returned she’d pulled the shirt down more, and he used his semi-dry button up to dry the skin around the cut. It’d didn’t look too bad, but he knew she would need to clean it when they finally made it back home. He carefully applied the bandage while being careful not to touch her too much. He knew he was lying to her when he tried playing off his feelings as lust and sexual frustration, but she didn’t really need to know that.
