Chapter one
I was walking along the road late at night trying to keep my head down to avoid Stephen noticing me if he were to be driving by looking for me. It was freezing and my whole body shook, not just from the temperature, but from fear. Every headlight was torture and I tensed just at the thought of him stopping to get out and yell at me or something worse. I stared at the cold, wet road and continued on, hoping with all my might that I might somehow turn invisible and make it to the police station.
Stephen was part of the gang that I was avoiding. Well, I guess you would call them a gang; a gang of three people. But they were so serious about it so that’s what you had to call them. They all got tattoos even, each of them on their upper arm of a snake, so you were forced to look at their "rippling muscles", Stephen had said. Stephen just happened to be my boyfriend. Well, ex- boyfriend now, which didn't make him too happy. He always got what he wanted and what he wanted was me (along with money, drugs, beer, and the respect of his friends). When I found out what his whole gang was about i broke it off which didn't make him too happy.
"At least give me a goodbye kiss," Stephen said, stepping closer with every word.
"I don't think that’s a good idea Stephen," I stammered trying to back away. My hands touched the wall behind me and I knew I was screwed. I was absolutely terrified of Stephen and what he might do, especially now that he was drunk.
"Fine then give me some goodbye sex babe, you owe me that," he slurred shoving a finger onto my chest, which seconds later rested into a hand. I pushed his hand off of me and tried to wiggle away but he was too fast. His hands gripped my hips and his fingers dug so hard into my skin that they would eventually leave bruises. I glanced at the giant picture frame hung on the wall next to me and by instinct grabbed it and smashed it onto his head. Stephen crumpled to the floor and groaned clutching his head, so I grabbed my jacket and bolted out the door.
Now as I could almost make out the lights from the police station ahead of me, I heard tires skidding behind me in symphony with loud screamo music blaring from the truck; Stephen's truck. I instantly started to run but something that I heard stopped me. It was Stephen crying for help, saying that he thinks he broke his ankle and he couldn't move. I knew that I shouldn't go back, but I did have feelings for him that couldn't just vanish and I didn't want to leave him stranded with an injury. Reluctantly I turned around and headed for his car.
When I reached the car I saw Stephen in the front seat holding his hand and crouching over. I walked up to him cautiously.
"Stephen....are you alright?" All of a sudden he looked up with a devilish smile and said,
"I will be once I get my goodbye sex" He grabbed my jacket as I screamed and pulled me into his truck.
I woke up in a blind panic, sweat drenched sheets grasped in my hand. I hate having those nightmares, I thought to myself. They don't help the fact that I can't get over this and won't until... no, stop. I can't even let my mind wander there right now. Not before the first day of school. I have to be ready and confident.
I looked into the mirror as I took a few deep breathes. At least i still have my virginity, that's the most important thing that he didn't win. But as I let myself think about it, the memory floods back.
The cop lights are flashing in my eyes and I can already barely see from my tear-streaked vision. I was so relieved that a cop heard me scream and came over to investigate, luckily just in time. I saw Stephen being put into hand cuffs and i sighed. He looked over at me and shouted,
“This isn't over bitch! I'll have Jon and Ben get you! They know what to do! They're loyal unlike your sorry a-" His words were cut off by him being shoved into the police car. Jon and Ben were the other two guys in their "gang" and I knew that they always had hated me and would be glad to do his dirty work. Some police officers tried to assure me that I would be safe, everything was over, but I knew they were wrong. Jon and Ben were still out there and they would get me.
I shuddered as I came back to grips with reality and checked the time. I quickly got dressed and ready and ran out the door to my car. My parents are rarely home, plus I'm an only child so I'm usually alone around my house. It's nice though, to have privacy when you need it most. That's what I prefer anyways, to be alone.
Stopping the car to pick up my best friend Lilly, I noticed her huge grin as she ran down her driveway to hop in the car. Her brown hair with blonde highlights was bouncing against her shoulders and her big bright hazel eyes were all aglow in the readiness for school.
"Aren't you excited for junior year??" she asked excitedly as she took out her makeup bag to touch-up before school.
"Yeah I guess so, its school," I joked uneasily. Actually I was terrified. I hadn't told anybody about what happened over summer and luckily we kept it out of the press with a lot of hard work, and money. Luckily since both my parents are amazing real estate agents and are always at work, we're rich. And I have time to myself which doesn't bother me considering my parents aren't very parental.
We pulled up to school just in time to see the mob of kids close into a circle. Great on the first day there's already a fight. I parked my car and we got out to go see who was fighting. Two unrecognizable guys were lashing out and beating at each other. Spit and fists were flying in the air as each pelted the other with his fist in the face or gut. Wow, this was a serious fight, I thought. Finally, the principle came out and broke up the two just in time for me to see their faces. One was Jimmy Turner, the captain of the football team, and the other was Jake Harding.
Jake Harding has been in every class I've had since third grade. He's the school bad boy and not afraid to prove it. Yet, he's very quiet. He won't talk unless spoken to and he has a deep husky voice that gives you shivers when he speaks. He drives a motorcycle to school every day and always sits in the back of the class. Everyday at lunch there are girls on either side of him, each one trying to talk to him but he's in his own world. He usually just stares at an unrecognizable point in the room, never fully aware.
"Wow of course it would be those two!" yelled Lilly over the commotion. I shrugged and pulled her through the crowd to my locker. As I walked by I looked back one more time through all the people to survey the damage just to realize that Jake was for once not staring at a distant unrecognizable point, but at me.
