VENUS

{AUGUST 27th, 2020}

i woke up this morning earlier than usual due to mateo wanting to play mario kart with me. the kid is 3 and could kick my ass in it. "mommy, can i be toad?" he tugged on my shirt as i began to set up his profile.

i smiled softly as i changed his character to toad, "there, buddy." i handed him the controller and set up my racer. of course i was yoshi.

me and mateo had an hour-long challenge against each other, i only won once and thats because mateo's controller died.

"i won mommy, i won!" he danced around singing.

i laughed softly and shook my head, looking down at my apple watch for the time. 1:43 , zion should be getting here at 2:15 to pick up mateo. "you want to help me pack for you to spend time with daddy?" i questioned mateo as i sat up from the beanbag chair.

"yes!" he smiled as he held his arms out for me. i returned the smile as i picked him up, taking him to his room. "can i pack my dino jammies?" he asked me as i sat him down on his bed.

"of course!" i exclaimed as i picked up his elmo bag. i went in his closet and grabbed his pajamas before walking back over to mateo. "what else?"

"hmm," he hummed as he hopped up and walked over to his closet. i watched as he looked up at his shirts and studied it. "that shirt!" he shot his finger to a blue paw patrol shirt. i smiled and walked over, taking it down and grabbing a pair of khakis as well.

soon after we packed we headed downstairs. it was 2:10 so zion should be coming soon. "want a snack before you go?" i asked mateo as i sat him on the counter.

he nodded and adjusted his self on the counter. i grabbed him some gummies and handed it to him. "want to head outside now?" i asked him as he finished up. he nodded once more. i could tell he was getting tired. mateo loves to talk; he also loves his daily naps.

i nodded and picked him up and slung his bag over my shoulder, before heading out the door and sitting on the rocking chair outside. "mommy?" he mumbled against my shoulder.

"yes love?"

"can you sing me the song grandma used to sing to you?"

i nodded as i began rocking the chair and patting his back lightly. "mmm, so this is love, mmmm, so this is lovee." i sung lowly to mateo. i always loved cinderella. before my mom switched lanes on me, she use to really love me and sing to me.

mateo slowly fell asleep. i was too caught up in my thoughts to realize a full hour had gone by. it was 3:20 and zion still wasn't here.

my eyebrows furrowed and i clicked on my phone, sending him a text.

TO : caleb
hey r u ok? u were supposed to get mateo a hour ago; if u fell asleep its fine just please come get him soon.

i sent the text before rocking the chair again.

time passed, the sky darkened, no zion. i just had to face what was reality.

he isn't coming.

i let out a long sigh before heading inside and locking my door, heading up to my room. mateo was still asleep. he's going to be up all night when he wakes up.

i laid mateo down on my bed and tucked him in, placing two pillows on the end of the bed to stop him from falling off. he's a wild sleeper. i sat down on the bed softly and leaned down, kissing his forehead, "no one deserves you, mateo." i spoke lowly, running my hand down his face

the door bell rung through out the small house. i bit my lip as i got up and closed the door lightly. i walked to the door and peeped in the peep hole.

caleb's bitch ass.

my face quickly pulled into an angry frown, before i stepped back and pulled the door open. "really? are you fucking kidding me? please tell me you have the best excuse in the world for keeping your son waiting on the porch all the day." i crossed my arms.

"venus," zion sighed, "something popped up." he spoke as he twisted his dread. "where is he—."

"NO," i rose my voice and pushed him, "is that something really more important than mateo? this isn't going to fucking happen! mateo will not be your second choice and he will not wait around for a father who will play tug-of-war with his heart! you rather make your son your number one priority or stay away!" my voice cracked, causing zion to look down.

"mommy? daddy?" i heard the small voice from behind me. me and zion both put our attention on the small boy, rubbing his eyes before glancing in between me and zion.

zion bent down to mateo's height and held his arms out for him. mateo's face turned to a frightened look before walking over to me and grabbing onto my leg, "mommy? are you okay?" he questioned as he looked up to me.

my faced filled with disappointment as i turned to zion, who was already looking away with hurt filled on his faced. "maybe you should go, try again tomorrow." i said sternly as i ran my hand through mateo's soft curls.

he nodded before looking at mateo one more time and walked out. i walked over and locked the door before sitting on the couch and pulling mateo on my lap, rocking him. "i love you, you know that right?" i questioned him softly.

"mhm, i know mommy. i love you too." he placed his head on my chest, holding onto my arms.

"eternity?" i questioned as a few tears ran down my face; causing me to quickly wipe them and sniffle.

"eternity, mommy."
