He stood in the shadow of a gnarled oak tree, shrouded in darkness. Girlish laughter floated on the breeze, faint and enticing. He curled his hands around a branch, obsidian claws cutting into the bark. Hunger pulsed through him.
He pulled in a steadying breath. Patient. Needed to see if she was the right one. Three girls drove past there sent made his mouth water. Two of them skip up the steps to a graceful stone building. Appeal of thunder drowned out their goodbyes. The third, the fair-haired one, smiled with anticipation; she waved and turned towards the river, as he had known she would. He had been watching her for weeks.
He crept soundlessly through the shadows; the dark patches seemed to bend and follow him, shielding him from view as effectively as his hooded cloak. There she was standing on the rocks at the water's edge, hair a rippling white curtain in the moonlight. She stretched her arms out to catch the first raindrops, breathing deep as the wind picked up speed, chasing the roiling clouds across the sky.
Now. Now was the time, wail she glowed with new energy, before she could draw to much energy from the oncoming storm. He ran, a swift black night-wraith. The girl barely had time to turn; he bore her to the ground, the weight of his heavy cloak settling over them both. Delicious fear widened her eyes.
She lifted one hand, a pale point of energy building in her palm.
His whispered words brought roots cracking though the rocky earth. They snakes around the girl's ankles, her throat, her wrists, binding her to the ground with merciless finality. He leaned closer, breathing hard. Time to see.
He slid her long skirt up. First her calves. He examined the dark silver swirls marking her legs with satisfaction, ignoring her panicked whimpers.
Now the eyes- to confirm what he'd seen from a distance. Chocolate pools, deepened by terror. He stroked a claw delicately down the side of her face, then over the root holding her left arm. The root loosened, allowing him to look beneath th the designs inked around her wrist.
Blue. Disappointment flooded him, bitter, going.
Blue for water. It wasn't her disappointment flooded him, bitter, going. Blue for water. It wasn't her, after all. His nails bit into the girl's skin. Her strangled cry of pain was not enough to ease his frustration.
Hunger clawed at him, exposing the one threadbare consolation: this one was now expandable. He need hide his identity no longer. The girl wouldn't be in any position to tell tales after tonight.
Her eyes widened as the hood slid to his shoulders come... Twisted in a silent scream. He pulled her wrist to his mouth, carefully piercing the blue energy tattoo with his wrong things. Her body arched and booked, but he sighed in relief of her life force drained into him, sweet with you and figure her eyes widened as the hood slid to his shoulders, Phillips twisted in a silent scream. When he had said, he stood, staring down at the faded Essence- all that remained of the vibrant laughing girl. He swept one foot out, dispelling the dust. It floated away, shining notes in the rainy night, "Ashes to Ashes."
