"pinky... I need your help."

stephanie finished applying a layer of lip gloss, then backed away from her vanity and faced trixie.

"yeah, trixie? what do you need?" she gave a friendly smile.

oh, great. I said it. now I just have to tell her.

trixie had been contemplating all day even telling her own best friend whether or not about her... kind-of-sort-of crush. or so she thought he was just a kind-of-sort-of kind of crush. ugh. whoever said falling in love was the most beautiful feeling in the world, like you were flying through heart-shaped clouds in the sky or whatever was lying. the universe was playing a trick on her. why would her, trixie troubleby, the resident troublemaker of the town, fall in love anyway?

especially with...

trixie took a deep breath and sighed. here goes.

"can you help me ask someone to the start-of-summer dance?" she spoke fast to get it over with, just like ripping off a band-aid.

at first stephanie opened her mouth the slightest bit, surprised, but she smiled again.

"sure." she plopped down on her bed next to where trixie was sitting. trixie then smiled the tiniest bit back at her, slightly satisfied with her response.

stephanie then playfully smirked and poked her arm. "sooo... who's the special someone that's on your mind?" she giggled.

trixie blushed and squealed as she hid her face in her hands.

"agghh, stop!!! you're embarrassing me."

after a few moments, she swiftly lifted her head up and stared at stephanie for a couple of seconds, the redness on her cheeks still there.

"okay, can you swear not to tell anybody about this, especially who I'm going to ask?"

"of course. pinky swear." stephanie lifted and held out her pinky as so. trixie did the same thing and linked their fingers together.

"alright..." trixie looked around to make sure no one was listening. "i...i like stingy, okay? but I don't know if he'll accept my offer." she sighed and hopped off stephanie's bed.

"that's okay, trixie. also, don't take this the wrong way or anything, but i thought you didn't like stingy. you've teased him for years!"

"i do, but it's just..."

"just what?"

"if anyone finds out i've gone soft, i won't be taken seriously anymore. nobody's going to like my leadership or stunts or pranks anymore, nothing."  she grumpily slung herself back on stephanie's bed and sulked.

"oh, trixie, that's not true." stephanie reassured her best friend. "everyone has a soft side. even robbie's one of the biggest softies!" she chuckled. "just put a smile on your face and ask him. you might be surprised."

"you sure?" trixie asked, not 100% convinced.

"i'm very sure."

later that evening, stephanie and trixie were walking together to the end-of-summer dance.

stephanie's pink hair was curled in ringlets, her usual purple headband replaced with a lock of hair tied into a white ribbon. she wore a white sundress with a pink floral pattern topped with a pink buttoned cardigan. shiny white flats donned her feet.

trixie, on the other hand, wore a bright red jumper dress to match her fun attitude. the top half of her raven hair was tied into two simple braids meeting at the back of her head, secured with a yellow flower clip (stephanie did it). she still wore her usual red and yellow sneakers, refusing to squeeze into anything else.

the end-of-summer dance took place in a flat meadow near their school, plastic tables and chairs set up, plastic tablecloths, food stands under canopy tents decorated with colorful streamers. that scene combined with the glorious sunset happening at the moment, and it was a truly beautiful sight.

ziggy, of course, was noshing on all the cupcakes and pasties he could find, living his best life. pixel was chatting with stingy nearby, the latter having a facial expression that read...nervous?

they all turned around when stephanie and trixie walked into the area.

trixie was the first to catch stingy's attention. he somehow couldn't help himself to gaze, but caught himself in the act of doing so for couple of seconds too much.

she was so pretty, darn it.

he then turned back to pixel.

"are you sure about me asking her? she's going to laugh and make fun of me, i know it." he whispered, worried.

"just try. besides, if you don't ask, you might regret it."

the posh boy sighed. "you're right." he turned over, only to see none other than the girl he just so happened to be talking about.

"oh, hi..." stingy awkwardly greeted. "um..."

"would you like to dance with me?" the two said in unison, both unaware the other would ask that very question. both pairs of eyes widened in surprise. they then both chuckled at the coincidence.

"oh, come here, dork." trixie playfully replied, suddenly feeling spontaneous. she grabbed his hands and brought him farther away from the dance area, into more of the meadow. she goofily spun him around and dipped him, giggling. stingy, on the other hand, was strangely enjoying it. he couldn't help but smile and laugh a little during the whole thing.

trixie then accidentally slipped on the ground, bringing stingy down with her. stingy then brought both of them back up, panicked about his suit getting grass stains.

"hey, my father just got this dry-cleaned for me." he grumbled, before realizing his hands were on trixie's shoulders and their faces were just inches apart. his face suddenly softed up, realizing the position they were in. stingy hesitated, then just dove in and kissed her for a solid two seconds. he quickly pulled away, not believing what he just did. trixie couldn't either, her mouth slightly opened and cheeks flushed.

and then they both realized...

they were each others' first kiss.

both of them then awkwardly chuckled as one put their hand in the other's and they continued to walk through the tall grass of the distant meadow. though they both tried to pretend nothing like that happened at all, there was this secret feeling of enjoyment and loveliness that lingered long after.

and trixie, then, in the most discreet way, began to believe whoever said love was like you were flying through heart-shaped clouds in the sky or whatever...told the truth?

maybe. probably.

oh, alright. yes.
