As soon as I shut my car door I pulled out my phone and slid it open to 10 unread texts from my best friend, Canada. She was so dramatic and needy and sometimes annoying but she was my best friend, and most days my only friend. This time she was texting to complain about her boyfriend, Mack. I say 'this time' loosely because it was what she complained about every other time as well. On a typical day she would've called, but I was working all morning. Maybe it was bad-best-friend of me but I didn't reply to any of her messages. I just wasn't in the mood. Today was Saturday, the day that I had been dreading all week. I had an appointment with the woman who birthed me. It was actually a lunch date, and she was actually my biological mother, whose name was Tanya, but I didn't think of it either of those ways at all.

When I was 3, my parents got their divorce. This felt like the divorce of the year. It sounds so weird to say, but it was meant to happen. They got into this huge fight and then Tanya stormed out with all her things and never came back. So I've always relied on my dad, and he's never let me down once. Tanya met a rich, old lawyer named Phil and they had a daughter together named Kay, short for Katie. Which I thought was a little unsettling since my name is Kay, short for Kaylyn. I was 4 when she was born, and I've gone by my full name ever since. When I was 11, dad met Heather after a series of failed girlfriends, and they got married. To me, Heather was a godsend in stepmother form. I could not have asked for a better replacement mother figure. Heather has one son with her ex-husband Hank. He is technically my step brother, but I'm embarrassed to say I don't know much about him, and I've never actually seen him. He lives in Maine with his dad, but he's a year older than me and his name is Hartman.

I pressed the button on the right side of the steering wheel and the engine rumbled. I pulled my seatbelt across my chest and put the car in reverse. I can't believe I'm really going to lunch with Tanya! I shifted the car in to reverse and backed out swiftly, thats when I heard a yell. My foot crushed the brake as my heart sunk to my ass. Oh my gosh. Did I just hit someone? I put the car into park, though it was halfway pulled out into the middle of the aisle and jumped out my seat. A tall boy stood hunched over with his hand giving him balance against the back of my black coupe.

I quickly ran to him and put my hand on his back. "I am so sorry! I didn't see-."

"No, no, I'm okay." He looked into my eyes and I felt chills run down my spine. Come on, Kaylin. You just hit this poor kid and now you're looking at him with googly eyes?!

"No, I feel terrible..Are you hurt?"

"I'm fine, really." He stood all the way up and turned to walk away.

"Can I get you anything? I just feel so bad." I grabbed his arm and stopped him.

"Don't feel bad. You didn't really hit me that hard."

"Okay." I creased my lips. "Do you need a ride or anything?"

He chuckled a light laugh, and when he did, his eyes squinted up. "If you want to give me anything, how about your number." He gracefully slid his phone out of his pocket and into my hands. I looked down at the phone and then back up at him. I was stuck. The nervousness paralyzed me and I stood there like an awkward idiot!

"Or..not." He looked to the side of him and grabbed the phone from me.

"Hey, wait! I just- was caught off guard, okay?" I grabbed the phone back from him and began creating my contact.

He scoffed, and then smiled at me. When I looked up his teeth were sunk into his lip as he took the phone from my hands again. I swallowed hard and blinked heavily. "Well have a good day." I flashed a closed mouthed smile and turned around back towards my car.
