Lewis looked up from her strawberry milkshake as Roberts sat down in the booth, taking a seat on the cushioned bench across from her. He grabbed the plate with a burger on it and pulled it in front of him, then the strawberry milkshake. He took a long sip off it, smiling slightly at Lewis.
"Nervous, Ms. Smith?" Roberts asked, dipping a fry into mustard and biting off an end.
Lewis nodded her head, dabbing at the corner of her mouth with a napkin. "How about you, Mister Smith? Nervous that we'll be teaching our first class of Field Warfare soldiers?"
Roberts smiled, nodding as he chewed a mouthful of hamburger. He swallowed and answered "Yeah, they get here tonight. I'll be greeting them on the flight line."
Two men sat down and Lewis straightened up, her eyes going wide. She reached out and grabbed Roberts's hand.
"Psst. Look behind you, at the two guys who just sat down," she hissed.
Roberts frowned, turning slightly and looking, then ducking back.
"Holy shit," he said, watching as Lewis slid slightly so she couldn't be seen by the two men who had just sat down.
"They look the same," Roberts said, shaking his head.
"He's still in that brace. Christ, it seems like they would have fixed that leg by now," Lewis said, mimicking Roberts head motion.
"Should we go say anything to them?" Roberts asked. Lewis could see sweat beaded on his forehead.
Lewis shook her head. "No. We aren't those people any more. Let's just eat and head home."
"Wanna get it to go? That'll give us about two hours before the new class get here," Roberts said, giving her that smile that made her knees go weak.
Lewis squeezed his hand, their wedding rings clinking together.
"I'd like that."
